SPORTS SHORTS: Baxter overwhelms GMG girls, 67-29

BAXTER — The GMG girls basketball team fell behind from the outset and lost its Iowa Star Conference South Division opener 67-29 to Baxter on Tuesday night.

The host Bolts (1-1, 1-0) got a game-high 18 points from Caitlyn Bruntz and 12 apiece from Lillie Vansice and McKenzie Eslinger.

Baxter led 29-4 after the first quarter and maintained a 47-8 advantage at the half.

Jordan Yilek led GMG (0-2, 0-1) with six points. Belle Duncan, Emily Vaughn and Lindsey Slifer added five points apiece.

The Wolverines return to action Friday with a home game against Collins-Maxwell.

Cadet duo too much for West Marshall

IOWA FALLS — Karson Sharar and Logan Aldinger combined to score 48 points as Iowa Falls-Alden’s dynamic duo helped the Cadets handle West Marshall 67-40 in Tuesday’s season opener.

Sharar had 27 points and Aldinger added 21 more for Iowa Falls-Alden, which led by five after the first quarter but carried a 38-19 lead into the halftime break.

Gabe Jones led West Marshall (0-1) with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Caleb Keigan chipped in eight points and Manny Lazard finished with six.

Iowa’s DeSanto picked for B1G award

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa junior Austin DeSanto has been named Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

In a matchup of 1 vs. 2, DeSanto defeated Wisconsin’s Seth Gross, 6-2, in Iowa’s Big Ten opener on Sunday night.

DeSanto scored one takedown in the first period and two more in the second to hand Gross his first loss at 133 pounds since the 2017 NCAA finals.

DeSanto, previously ranked No. 2 in the country, climbed to No. 1 in the latest polls.

The Big Ten Conference honor is the first for Iowa this season and the second of DeSanto’s career. He was named co-Wrestler of the week on January 22.

The top-ranked Hawkeyes return to the mat Sunday at No. 12 Princeton. The dual begins at 1 p.m. at Jadwyn Gymnasium in Princeton, N.J.
