Confirmed coronavirus cases top 1,000

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in West Virginia topped 1,000 in numbers released Friday evening by the state Department of Health and Human Resources.

There are 1,010 positive cases, 31,409 negative and 32 deaths. There have been a total of 32,419 tests given in West Virginia since early March. Positive cases increased by 22 since the Friday morning report.

The state’s rate of positive tests is 3.12 percent.

The number of tests have increased significantly in recent days with Gov. Jim Justice’s order to test or retest all nursing home residents and staff members. State DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said Friday tests had been conducted at 83 of the 130 nursing homes in the state with tests at 12 more homes scheduled for this weekend.

The state has reported a 32nd COVID-19 death. An 84-year-old Jackson County woman died in connection with the virus.

“We join the family in mourning the passing of this West Virginian,” Crouch said.

Deaths have been recorded in Jackson (8), Wayne (6), Monongalia (4), Kanawha (3), Marion (2), Wood (2), Barbour (1), Berkeley (1), Hampshire (1), Harrison (1), Logan (1), Mingo (1) and Ohio (1).

There are 97 people in the hospital with 36 patients in ICU. Nineteen of those patients are on ventilators.
