Meditation and yoga are two very important and highly beneficial practices for overall well-being. These help in abating physical pain, strengthening the core of the body and improving mental health. According to a study published in the Journal of American Osteopathic Association, there is an 8-week course named Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) course that can help in lessening chronic pain. More than 89% participants have gotten benefited from this course. It helped in improving their mood, functional capacity and perceptions of pain leading to a better and less painful life.

“Many people have lost hope because, in most cases, chronic pain will never fully resolve. However, mindful yoga and meditation can help improve the structure and function of the body, which supports the process of healing,” says Cynthia Marske who is an osteopathic physician and director of graduate medical education at the Community Health Clinics of Benton and Linn County.

How yoga and meditation can heal chronic pain?

As explained by Dr. Marske, these can heal the pain but not cure. There is a lot of difference between these two. “Curing means eliminating disease, while healing refers to becoming more whole. With chronic pain, healing involves learning to live with a level of pain that is manageable. For this, yoga and meditation can be very beneficial.”

As per Dr. Marske, “Chronic pain often goes hand-in-hand with depression. Mindfulness-based meditation and yoga can help restore both a patient’s mental and physical health and can be effective alone or in combination with other treatments such as therapy and medication.”
