UNC Basketball: Garrison Brooks Named to the CBS Sports Preseason All-America 3rd Team

The Tar Heel senior is joined on the 3rd team by Marcus Garrett, Sam Hauser, Evan Mobley, and BJ Boston

Tar Heel senior Garrison Brooks has landed on the CBS Sports 2020-21 Preseason All-America Third Team.

Brooks is joined on the third team by two other seniors and two freshmen. The other seniors are Marcus Garrett, a 6’5” senior guard from the Kansas Jayhawks, and Sam Hauser, a 6’8” senior forward who transferred from Marquette to Virginia. Hauser’s brother Joey also transferred from Marquette and will be playing for Michigan State.

The two freshmen on the third team are Evan Mobley and BJ Boston. Mobley is a 7’0” forward who will play for USC. Boston, a 6’7” guard, is part of the most recent crop of highly-ranked recruits to play for Kentucky.

The first and second teams shape up as follows:

First Team

  • Jared Butler | Baylor | 6’3” | Junior | Guard
  • Cade Cunningham | Oklahoma State | 6’8” | Freshman | Guard
  • Ayo Dosunmu | Illinois | 6’5” | Junior | Guard
  • Luka Garza | Iowa | 6’11” | Senior | Center
  • Corey Kispert | Gonzaga | 6’7” | Senior | Forward

Second Team

  • Collin Gillespie | Villanova | 6’3” | Junior | Guard
  • Trayce Jackson-Davis | Indiana | 6’9” | Sophomore | Forward
  • Remy Martin | Arizona State | 6’0” | Senior | Guard
  • Jeremiah Robinson-Earl – Villanova | 6’9” | Sophomore | Forward
  • Marcus Zegarowski | Creighton | 6’2” | Junio | Guard

Of the 15 student-athletes on the 2019-20 CBS Sports All-America postseason teams last year, Luka Garza is the only one to show up on these preseason teams.

Nine of the 15 are early entrants in the NBA Draft: Vernon Carey, Devon Dotson, Malachi Flynn, Tre Jones, Daniel Oturo, Filip Petrusev, ImmanuelQuickley, Jalen Smith, and Obi Toppin.

The other five players graduated and therefore can’t be on this year’s preseason lists: Udoka Azubuike, Markus Howard, Myles Powell, Payton Pritchard and Cassius Winston.

Gary Parrish shared his ballot on Twitter and actually placed Brooks on his second team:

This is the fourth season in a row a North Carolina player has been named to one of the CBS Sports Preseason All-America lists. Curiously, the last time the lists were devoid of Tar Heels was the 2016-17 national championship season.

In addition to Brooks this year, those three players were:

2019-20 – Cole Anthony (Second Team)
2018-19 – Luke Maye (First Team)
2017-18 – Joel Berry (Second Team)

None of those three made the CBS Sports postseason All-America teams in those given years. The most recent players with those distinctions are Justin Jackson (First Team in 2016-17) and Brice Johnson (First Team in 2015-16).

Brooks and the rest of the Tar Heels will take the court for the first time in just under a month to begin the 2020-21 season.
