South Bound Brook Man Charged With Identity Theft

Sherman Martin, 26 was found to be using a stolen identity and driving a car belonging to the stolen identity, police said.

SOUTH BOUND BROOK, NJ — A South Bound Brook man has been arrested and charged with identity theft following a month-long investigation, Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson announced.

Sherman Martin, 26 of Swing Bridge Lane was charged on Aug. 22 after the South Bound Brook Police Department, with the help of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and the Bound Brook Police Department searched his home.

South Bound Brook Police stopped Martin during a traffic stop and found he was using a stolen identity and a vehicle registered under that stolen identity. This kicked off the beginning of the investigation, Robertson said.

Martin was arrested during the search of his home and various items of evidence were taken. Another man, Malcolm Pierce of Paterson, who was at the home was also arrested after being found to have outstanding warrants, Robertson said.

Martin was charged with two counts of second-degree identity theft and two counts of third-degree identity theft, as well as several disorderly persons offenses. He was lodged at the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing. Additional charges may be pending.
