Each week, the NJ.com football staff will recognize some of the more outstanding individual performances each week in the state’s six football conferences. Below are the Mid-State 38 Players of the Week on offense and defense.
DEFENSE
Joey Scarcia, Voorhees, Sr., DE: He began the game in spectacular fashion with a 61-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown off Bound Brook’s opening snap, and was a steady defensive force thereafter to help the Vikings to a 13-10 victory Friday in Bound Brook. Scarcia made four tackles, one for a loss, and recorded three sacks as Voorhees snapped the three-game losing streak that ended the 2018 season.
OFFENSE
Will Ezema, Hunterdon Central, Sr., RB: Ezema equalled his impressive touchdown total through the first three games of last season in fewer than 36 minutes Friday to pace The Red Devils’ 33-12 upset over then-No. 10 Sayreville in Sayreville. He scored on three short runs in the first half to stake his team to a 20-0 lead, and added two more TD runs in the third quarter to match his single-game best. Ezema finished with 188 yards on 41 attempts and scored all but one point.
