Indiana woman sentenced to 16 years in prison after toddler found with broken bones, torn nose

ELKHART, Ind. — An Indiana woman has been sentenced to 16 years behind bars in connection with a child neglect case involving a 2-year-old boy.

According to WSBT and the Times-Union, Jammy Stacy, 43, of Elkhart, was one of five people charged after authorities learned that the toddler, identified only as Vincent, had suffered numerous injuries, including broken bones, gaps in his scalp, a torn nose, brain bleeding and fingernail marks on his face.

Investigators believe the injuries occurred while the Nappanee boy was in Stacy’s care in the months before March 3, 2018, when he was treated at an area hospital, the Times-Union reported. Stacy, who is not the child’s legal guardian, told investigators that Vincent hurt his nose when he fell on lattice and claimed that he often punched himself and slammed his head into the wall, according to the newspaper. She said she never sought treatment for his wounds because she wasn’t his parent, authorities said.

Stacy returned Vincent to his mother, Rune Springer, and stepfather, Travis Tillottson, on March 2, 2018, and told them not to report his injuries to police, according to the Times-Union. Springer and Tillottson didn’t seek treatment for the boy until a day later, authorities said.

Stacy was found guilty of Level 3 child neglect last month, while Springer and Tillottson pleaded guilty to Level 6 felony neglect, the news outlets reported. Stacy’s mother, 60-year-old Annette Priestley, and aunt, 60-year-old Fayette Robinette, also are facing Level 3 neglect charges in the case, according to the Times-Union.
