Tourism brochure unveiled in Pottsville

Jul. 24—POTTSVILLE — Under sunny skies and in front of a historic city building on South Centre Street, the Pottsville Commission on Tourism unveiled its 2021 Walking Tour brochure on Friday.

Jerry Enders, commission chairman, said the 10,000 new brochures feature historic sites, antique shops, restaurants, museums and other local places of interest.

"It shows people that we here in Pottsville support tourism," he said.

The brochure features a detailed map of Pottsville with numbered locations and corresponding information and descriptions. A new one is produced every two years.

"There is a lot to see in Pottsville and a lot to do," Enders said. "The brochure highlights places and makes it easy for people to get around."

Enders explained the Pottsville Commission on Tourism brochure started 20 years ago as a single page named "19 Places You Don't Want to Miss in Pottsville" and has evolved into the current brochure that features 53 places of interest.

Enders said it is published at no cost to the city or taxpayers. Printing costs are paid for by businesses and organizations that rent space on the "Welcome to Pottsville" changeable letter sign along Route 61 near Dunkin' as well as from donations by community supporters and tourism partners.

He highlighted two civic organizations, the Pottsville Rotary Club and the Pottsville Lions Club, that use the sign for their upcoming events.

In addition to renting space on the sign, Enders said, the Lions Club makes a $400 donation each year to the tourism commission.

The tourism commission is only successful because of the organizations that partner with it, he said.

Partners are Explore Schuylkill, the Pottsville Rotary Club, the Pottsville Lions Club, the Pottsville Business Association, the Schuylkill County Historical Society, the Pottsville Area Development Corp., E.T. Trophy Shop, Pottsville Provision, Black Rock Brewing Co., Fanelli Warehousing and Distribution Center, Farlow's, The Maid's Quarters and Wheel restaurant.

"All these places and others have come together to support tourism in Pottsville," Enders said.

The 2021 Walking Tour brochure is available at businesses and the office of Explore Schuylkill, in the lower level of Union Street Station.
