A former member of the New Zealand ski team has died while on holiday in Mexico.

Philippa Greig died at the weekend from an unconfirmed cause, although the Otago Daily Times reports she suffered a brief unexpected illness.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they were aware of the death of a New Zealander in Mexico and the Ministry is providing the family with consular assistance.

No further comment was given due to privacy reasons.

Greig won the Open Women's title at the 2004 New Zealand Free Ski Nationals.

Queenstown native Steve Wilde, a friend of Greig's, said he was "devastated" in a social media post on Tuesday.

He said he and Greig were in contact last week, and had planned to meet up in the coastal resort town Puerto Vallarta.
