Port St. Lucie officials continue to improve workforce housing plan
The city of Port St. Lucie continues to move forward to improve the affordable housing issue.
Members of the city’s Affordable Housing Committee began Thursday afternoon’s meeting by appointing a new chair and going over incentives they’ve come up with and getting feedback and direction.
Alex Tasca is the Deputy Director of Neighborhood Services with the city of Port St. Lucie.
Tasca said the goal is to look at the incentives that the city has adopted over the last 10, 15, and 30 years in the housing element of the comprehensive plan and see where they can expand and find room for improvement.

"And potentially look for additional funding and get more accomplished in this field cause as we know it’s becoming a bigger and bigger issue in the community,” Tasca said.
She said the most recent accomplishment they were able to get passed was a collaboration with St. Lucie County and Fort Pierce to all work together and come up with a comprehensive housing analysis.
Tasca said it’s something they plan to work on this summer and come up with a formal document that will lay the foundation for the city to move forward and determine what they need and how to implement it.

They’re not just focusing on affordable housing.
“The city is very good at trying to develop our economic sector and bringing in more jobs to the city cause we all know we need that,” Tasca said. “We also need housing that will be available for those workers when they come so you can call it workforce housing, as well.”
The next meeting is set for next month. Officials hope to present their final report before the end of the year.
