State Representative Turco Endorsed By AFT Connecticut

(NEWINGTON, CT) --- State Representative Gary Turco announced that he is being endorsed for re-election by AFT Connecticut, a statewide federation of nearly 90 local labor unions. AFT represents more than 30,000 teachers and school support staff, nurses and healthcare professionals, higher education faculty, and state and municipal government employees.

“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of AFT Connecticut,” Turco said. “I’m proud to have the support of education professionals, healthcare workers, and government employees, who are all being asked to go above and beyond during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have our backs, and I will continue to work hard to have theirs.”

In his first term, Turco championed several key education and healthcare initiatives. As vice chair of the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee, he was instrumental in creating PACT, the state’s first debt-free community college program. Among Turco’s healthcare accomplishments, one of the most notable is expanding coverage for breast cancer screenings in women with dense breasts.

According to AFT Connecticut’s website, the organization “supports candidates for legislative and statewide office who are committed to stand up for all working families at the Capitol in Hartford.” Turco co-sponsored bills creating Connecticut’s new Family and Medical Leave program and increasing the state’s minimum wage to $15 by 2023.

“Newington’s working families can count on me to be a steadfast advocate for issues that matter to them,” Turco said. “If I am re-elected, they can count on me to be their voice in Hartford.”
