Viewers will be able to watch brain surgery live on TV later this month.

National Geographic Channel is planning to present live coverage from the operating room during an awake deep brain stimulation surgery in a two-hour special.

Brain Surgery Live, taking place at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, will air on Sunday, October 25.

It will dive into and celebrate the human brain, and chronicle what science and medicine have historically taught us about the organ.

Deep brain stimulation surgery is a neurosurgical procedure used to treat symptoms such as tremor.

National Geographic Channels US president Tim Pastore said: "From our Emmy-nominated series Brain Games to Brain Surgery Live, we continue to celebrate the brain, inspiring and feeding viewers' wonder and curiosity about the most complex and mysterious organ in the human body.

"We're offering a real-time look into the centre of a living brain that we hope will illuminate and teach, as well as tell a story that is unforgettable."
