2018 Department of Defense distinguished credit unions of the year

WASHINGTON, DC (August 20, 2019) — Five Defense Credit Unions were recognized with Distinguished Service Awards by their respective branches of the armed services during the Defense Credit Union Council’s 56th Annual Conference on August 19, 2019.

The Department of the Army awarded Navy Federal Credit Union at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, PA, for their outstanding commitment to service members and their families. Serving nearly 2,000 personnel and families at the Army War College, they have provided education to more than 3400 individuals. They achieved a 93%-member satisfaction score, by providing full service loan counseling, budget and financial counseling advice, and by participating in more than 15 community events. One particular employee went above and beyond by assisting a retired colonel in transferring all checking and saving funds to the credit union and gained the new member’s trust by assisting him in closing out all prior accounts, opened new accounts and helped set up all the members automated bills and utilities.

The Department of the Navy presented their distinguished award to two worthy credit Unions. Navy Federal Credit Union at Naval Support Activity (NSA), Panama City, FL was selected for the $1B and above category and Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Federal Credit Union at Naval Support Activity South Potomac, Dahlgren, VA, was awarded for under $1B category.

Navy FCU NSA, Panama City, FL, provided outstanding response and support after the devastation caused from hurricane Michael. Their quick action resulted in the opening of a temporary branch inside a hotel with six mobile ATM’s, cell phones, and mobile hotspots. They provided an emergency family assistance center with emergency loans and deferment of loans, assisted with mortgage insurance claims, and provided meals to families. They also supported MWR events, financial education seminars during Military Saves Week, encouraged financial savings and investments, and provided education on the blended retirement system.

Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) FCU provides a wide array of financial products and services with a special interest in promoting the importance of financial saving. NSWC donated $18,000 to more than 20 Moral Welfare Recreation (MWR) events. They are community focused and proudly donate school supplies to military children, acknowledge educators during the annual teacher appreciation luncheon, and provide holiday meals to military families. NSWC is committed to financial education and provided members payment deferment and low interest loans for those effected by government shutdowns.

The Department of the Air Force awarded their prestigious honor to two outstanding credit unions. Travis Credit Union, Travis AFB, CA, was awarded for the $1B and above category and Air Force Federal Credit Union, Joint Base San Antonio, TX, was awarded for under $1B category.

Travis CU was recognized for their commitment to their community through financial education. Travis CU is a crusader against predatory lending, and they are committed to financial education employing 5 full time education officers who have provided more than 65 educational seminars to more than 2,200 attendees. Travis CU participated in Military Saves Week by offering more than 20 educational seminars to credit union members.

Air Force FCU started in 1952 and has transformed into a robust institution with more than 47,000 members. The foundation of who they are is based on providing relevant services and personal financial management training to new Air Force recruits attending basic training. The credit union launched an education program and received the America Saves Designation of Savings Excellence for Credit Unions in 2016. They are dedicated to education and have created a great relationship with Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) leadership to ensure Airmen have access to financial education, products and services.

Although the criteria for these awards is structured differently by each of the Military Departments, common areas of consideration are: a) the delivery of financial service “above and beyond normal requirements;” b) special services provided at the command’s request; c) financial education and training; d) action taken to combat predatory lending; e) community support; and f) professional attitude and financial leadership.

Without question these DCUC member credit unions went above and beyond to provide exemplary service to their service members and their families, and for that, the Military Departments were most impressed and equally grateful.
