A crash involving a motorcycle left the motorcyclist with life-threatening injuries Thursday morning and shut down the outbound Kennedy Expressway south of the Irving Park neighborhood, according to state police.

The crash about 5:50 a.m. near Addison Street on Interstate 90/94 left the 38-year-old motorcyclist with serious injuries, according to an Illinois State Police spokesman.

The motorcyclist, a man from Chicago, was in the left lane heading north, then left the road, veering left, before crossing all four lanes of traffic to the right, according to a police news release. The motorcycle rear-ended a blue 2002 Mercury Mariner, which was merging onto the Kennedy from Addison.

Police didn’t say what might have caused the man to cut across the lanes or if he may have lost control of the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital with “life-threatening injuries,” while the driver of the Mercury declined medical treatment, according to the release.

All outbound lanes were still closed about 8 a.m. as police investigated, according to police and the Illinois Department of Transportation. They were reopened a short while later.
