Live from WKEN sports blog, Sept. 23

Welcome to the new home of the “Live from WKEN” sports broadcasting blog.

Passing of a legend

Pro Football Hall of Famer and Chicago Bears great Gale Sayers passed away early Wednesday at age 77. NFL Network turned to live programming on Sayers’ passing, mixing with its usual “Good Morning Football” replay.

NFL Network will show “A Football Life: Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus” at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The movie channel that adds the Hollywood Drama “Brian’s Song,’’ will score major points with fans. The movie, starring James Caan as cancer-stricken Brian Piccolo and Billy Dee Williams as Sayers, is a classic.

Pennant fever

There are only five days left in the shortened regular season for Major League Baseball. The Mets are mathematically alive, but not so much. The Yankees are in. Even with a number of teams clinching spots in recent days, there’s still a lot of movement within the pennant races and how it affects potential matchups.

As of Wednesday morning, it’s looking like the following may be the end result:

National League – No. 1 Dodgers vs. Brewers; No. 2/3 Braves or Cubs vs. Reds or Marlins; No. 4 Padres vs. No. 5 Cardinals

American League – No. 1 Rays vs. No. 8 Blue Jays; No. 2 White Sox vs. No. 7 Indians; No. 3 Athletics vs. No. 6 Astros; No. 4 Twins vs. No. 5 Yankees

Yankees in playoffs … again

The New York Yankees have qualified for next week’s MLB playoffs, and will likely face the Minnesota Twins (again), either in Minneapolis or at Yankee Stadium. YES Network will produce a live postseason preview show at 7 p.m. Sunday (after the regular-season finale), and there will be multiple replays on Sunday night, all day Monday and Tuesday morning before the playoff opener.

Baseball playoff primer

TBS will air one American League first-round series (guessing the Yankees), and ESPN has all the rest (seven other three-game series). A new twist is the return of MLB to ABC television for afternoon contests. ABC hasn’t carried MLB since the days of The Baseball Network.

A good guess is TBS will have prime-time evening games.

The ESPN posted schedules (subject to change):

Tuesday – WABC-7, 2 p.m.; ESPN at 4 p.m., 7 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 30 – ESPN, noon, 3:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 10 p.m.; ESPN2, 1 p.m., 5 p.m.; WABC-7, 2 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 1 – ESPN, noon, 3:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 10 p.m.; ESPN2, 1 p.m., 5 p.m.; WABC-7, 2 p.m.

Mega ratings

Monday Night Football scored a ratings success this week with the Las Vegas Raiders christening their new stadium with a win over the New Orleans Saints. ESPN and ABC Sports simulcast the usual broadcast, ESPN2 offered a celebrity viewing and ESPN Deportes had a Spanish-language broadcast. The game produced an average audience of 15.59 million viewers (second highest dating back 24 MNF games), a 31 percent audience increase over the 2019 week 2 matchup between the Browns and Jets (11.9 million).

Next Monday, the Chiefs take on the Ravens, with a first-ever matchup of former NFL MVPs who are age 25 and younger, Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City and Lamar Jackson of Baltimore.

A quick peak at the NFL

Much of the country will get the 1 p.m. game between the Raiders and Patriots, with Jim Nantz and Tony Romo on the call. Cross the border into Connecticut to get that telecast. New Paltz native Charles Davis and Ian Eagle have the 1 p.m. Texans at Steelers game – cross the Pennsylvania border to get that call.

Here in New York, we’re getting a Fox doubleheader. Kevin Burkhardt and Daryl Johnston have the 1 p.m. Niners at Giants game on WCBS-2. At 4:25 p.m. on Ch. 2, we’re getting the Cowboys at Seahawks game, with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.

Kevin Harlan and Trent Green have the call of the Jets-Colts game at 4:05 p.m. Sunday on WCBS-2.

NBC’s Sunday Night Football game between the Packers and Saints (8:25 p.m.) will have a relief pitcher as Mike Tirico fills in for Al Michaels, joining Cris Collinsworth. Tirico is expected to fill in a handful of times this season.

Two down, at least three to go

The Stanley Cup Finals got underway on Saturday. The Dallas Stars won the opener on Saturday, but Tampa Bay came up big on Monday as the Lightning evened the best-of-seven series. Game 3 is Wednesday evening, the final game telecast for NBC Sports Network this season.

Mike Emrick, Eddie Olczyk, Brian Boucher and Pierre McGuire have the call for NBC Sports. The pregame show features Kathryn Tappen, Keith Jones, Anson Carter and Patrick Sharp.

Kenny Albert and Joe Micheletti have the call for NBC Sports Radio/Westwood One Sports, with Steve Goldstein serving as studio host. Those games can be heard at WestwoodOneSports.com, on the TuneIn app and on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio Ch. 91.

Game 3 - Wednesday, (pregame, 7 p.m.), 8 p.m., NBCSN, SXM Ch. 91, 167 & 945 (Stars), 219 & 929 (Lightning)

Game 4 - Friday, Sept. 25, 8 p.m., WNBC-4, SXM Ch. 91, 167 & 945 (Stars), 219 & 929 (Lightning)

Game 5 - Saturday, Sept. 26, 8 p.m., WNBC-4, SXM Ch. 91, 167 & 945 (Lightning), 219 & 929 (Stars)

Game 6 - Monday, Sept. 28, 8 p.m., WNBC-4, SXM Ch. 91, 167 & 945 (Stars), 219 & 929 (Lightning)

Game 7 - Wednesday, Sept. 30, 8 p.m., WNBC-4, SXM Ch. 91, 167 & 945 (Lightning), 219 & 929 (Stars)

Boucher credits Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy with a strong bounce back game from his opener.

"(After) having a shaky Game 1, he needed to stand tall and he certainly did in the second period. Even though he gave up a goal on one of those 18 shots, I think several of his saves allowed his team to remain with the lead and it’s been a good bounce back outing for the Tampa Bay netminder.”

Anson Carter: “If anyone came into tonight’s game thinking it was going to be a short series, they were mistaken. Tampa Bay responded exactly how I thought they would respond…both teams punched and counterpunched, and that’s what you expect to see in a Stanley Cup Final.”

Patrick Sharp: “That was a good hockey game. We saw some power-play goals from the Lightning earlier, some beautiful plays from Nikita Kucherov, some saves from both goaltenders, some bad blood, a lot of big hits. It’s shaping up to be a pretty good series.”

Eddie Olczyk: “What a game. It had everything. … It had big hits, bad penalties by Dallas to put them behind the eight ball and you had tremendous goaltending at either end. Outstanding efforts to put the puck in the back of the net. We got ourselves a series.”
