Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s Prenup Talks Reportedly Took Months — Was It Awkward?

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are one of music’s most high-profile couples. The two, who first met on the set of the singing competition show The Voice, have been together for several years.

Although there has been a lot of talk about an engagement, Shelton and Stefani have resisted the pressure — that is, until recently. The couple announced their engagement at the end of October, prompting a renewed slew of fan interest, as well as many questions about how the two will be dividing their considerable wealth.

Stefani and Shelton first met around 2014, when they started working together as coaches on The Voice. At the time, they were both in relationships with other people, however, as their respective marriages dissolved, they were able to find solace in each other.

By late 2015, Shelton and Stefani were stepping out in public as a couple, although they still chose to stay mum about the status of their relationship.

Still, by early 2016, there was no denying that the two of them were very much an item. They began posting regularly about each other on social media and even gushed to reporters about their romance.

Ever since, they have been a fixture at red carpet events and Billboard charts, writing and collaborating together on a variety of projects. After months of speculation, Stefani and Shelton announced their engagement in October 2020. Reportedly, Shelton proposed to his girlfriend with a custom ring, and she was happy to accept it.

Stefani and Shelton have not yet opened up about what type of wedding they will have, how long the engagement will last, or what their future plans are. Still, some reports are surfacing that shed some light on the circumstances that led to their engagement.

According to US Magazine, Shelton and Stefani actually have been working on their prenuptial agreement for months, in advance of actually getting engaged. The report states that in fact, there has been absolutely no drama during the prenup discussions: “the process has been extremely effortless.” There have been “no hiccups, or outrageous demands.”

Some fans might wonder why Stefani and Shelton feel the need to get such an ironclad prenup in place, considering that they are both so clearly in love. Still, there are some very good reasons why a solid prenup makes a great deal of sense, even for two people who plan to spend the rest of their lives together.

Stefani has been in the music business for decades, and as the lead singer for the band No Doubt, Stefani has had multiple hit songs. She’s also a businesswoman and has curated several very successful product lines. Stefani has become very wealthy due to her many ventures, with a reported net worth of around $150 million.

As for Shelton, he has long been one of country music’s superstars, a singer responsible for hits like “Ole Red,” “Honey Bee,” and “God’s Country.” These days, Shelton’s net worth is an impressive $100 million — not quite as much as Stefani’s, but a staggering amount nonetheless. 

Clearly, it is important for these two superstars to establish a prenup agreement prior to their wedding in order to protect their mutual fortunes. Still, it seems unlikely that they will ever truly need to look to the terms of their agreement after they tie the knot — Stefani and Shelton have both been with each other for a long time, and have the commitment that it takes to see through any storm.
