LDH identifies 40 long-term care facilities in Louisiana as COVID-19 clusters
NEWS AT NOON. I AM DOING NOW BY MEDICAL DOCTOR CORY EBER. WHERE DO WE STAND RIGHT NOW WITH THE NUMBERS? >> OK, SO THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CASES AROUND THE WORLD, BUT I WANT TO STRESS THIS THE MOST, 90% OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE GOTTEN THIS ILLNESS AROUND THE WORLD ARE ALREADY FEELING BETTER, AND THEY ARE OVER IT. MEANING NOT DEAD, MEANING NOT SICK ANYMORE, 90% OF THOSE 130,000 PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY FEELING A LOT BETTER. THAT IS IMPORTANT. THIS IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL. I DON’T WANT YOU TO PANIC, BUT I DON’T WANT YOU TO PLAY ANY GAMES. CHRISTINA: NOT PANICKING IS SOMETHING WE HEARD THE GOVERNOR PENSION ANCHORED HE SAID NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE, NOT PANIC. SO, DR. HEBERT, ONE VIEWER SAID -- IF I SHOULD CALL MY DOCTOR FIRST OR IF I SHOULD GO TO THE HOSPITAL IF I HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND? DR. HEBERT: WHEN YOU CAME OUT OF THE HOUSE THIS MORNING, YOU SAW I HOPE MUCH OF YELLOW POLLEN ON YOUR CAR. THAT IS A REALLY BAD THING SOMEONE IS DOING IN NEW ORLEANS, BECAUSE IT IS ALLERGY SEASON. THE QUESTION IS, IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS, THOSE CUSE CONGESTION, AND OF EVERY YEAR YOU HAVE THAT, THEN YOU DO NOT NEED TO CALL ANYBODY, JUST TAKE ZERO TECH OR CLAIRTON AND GO ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS. IF YOU START TO HAVE FEVER OR SHORTNESS OF BREATH, YOU SHOULD CALL YOUR PHYSICIAN, AND YOUR PHYSICIAN WILL PROBABLY TELL YOU TO GO TO THE ER, SO THEY CAN PREPARE THE ER FOR YOUR PRESENTATION. HOWEVER, I JUST DO NOT WANT PEOPLE FLOODING THE ER FOR A RUNNY NOSE AND COUGH, BECAUSE IT IS ALLERGY SEASON, AND THOSE OF THE SYMPTOMS THAT ARE GOING TO BE THE PROBLEM. MOST PEOPLE, ONCE AGAIN, MOST OF THE PEOPLE WILL NOT EVEN KNOW THAT THEY HAVE THE CORONAVIRUS, AND A LARGER PERCENTAGE HAVE RUNNY NOSE, COUGH, SMALL FEVER, AND A VERY SMALL AMOUNT WILL PROGRESS TO SOMETHING LIKE WE ARE SEEING IN THE OLDER POPULATIONS ALWAYS ARE MEMBER, THOUGH, THIS IS A PROGRESSIVE DISEASE, AND WE DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT, BUT THEY JUST WANT YOU TO BE SAFE. ALSO, I WANT YOU TO REALIZE THAT NUMBERS ARE GOING TO GO UP. AS MANY TESTS AS WE PROCURE IN THIS STATE, THEY WILL BE POSITIVE. I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT. DO NOT GET MORE AND MORE WORKED UP AS WE GET MORE NUMBERS CHRISTINA: YOU KNOW, THAT SAME VIEWER ALSO ASKED -- HOW DO YOU MINIMIZE THE EXPOSURE TO THE LEAST AMOUNT OF PEOPLE? SAY THEY ARE SITTING AT HOME, AND THEIR SYMPTOMS START TO GET A LITTLE WORSE. DR. HEBERT:DR. HEBERT: THAT IS WHY WE STOPPED THE PARADES AND STOPPED ALL OF THE STUFF, AND PEOPLE ARE UPSET, BUT THE REALITY IS WE NEED TO CONTAIN THIS, AND THE REASON WE ARE STOPPING THE PUBLIC FUNCTION IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE IN THE FUNCTIONS THAT ARE GOING TO GET SICK, THAT IS NOT IT, WHAT WE ARE STOPPING FOR HIS WE NEED SOME DISTANCE IN -- DISTANCIG SO YOU DO NOT GO HOME AND SPREAD IT TO YOUR FAMILY. THAT IS WHY WE ARE CONTAINING THIS, NOT BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE OUT THE PARADE OR WHATEVER PARADE ARE GOING TO GET THIS AND BE SICK, BECAUSE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE AT MOST RISK ARE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE IN OUR SENIOR LITTLE -- SENIOR LIVING FACILITIES. THAT IS WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO PREVENT, BECAUSE YOU SAW WHAT HAPPENED IN CALIFORNIA, AND THAT IS WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO PREVENT HERE. CHRISTINA: I AM GLAD YOU MENTIONED THAT. WE KNOW THERE ARE FOUR PUBLIC CASES THAN THE LAMBERT HOUSE, AND THE LATEST CASE IS A 92-YEAR-OLD MAN. WE ARE SEEING THE GOVERNOR PLANS TO ANNOUNCE A 30-DAY STRICT VISITATION POLICY. TALK TO IT -- TALK TO US ABOUT WHY OUR ELDERLY POPULATION ARE AT HIGH RISK OF THIS AND WHAT THE RESTRICTIONS COULD MEAN TO PROTECT THEM. DR. HEBERT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO REALIZE THAT AS YOU AGE, YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM GETS WEAKER AND WEAKER. EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO A LOT OF THINGS, IT GETS WEAKER AND WEAKER, SO THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS IS SOMETHING THAT AN OLDER PERSON’S SYSTEM HAS NEVER SEEN BEFORE, AND THAT IS WHY THEY DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO FIGHT IT AS WELFARE BUT THERE ARE SOME TIPS OUT THERE. IF YOU ARE SITTING AT HOME OR YOU ARE IN A SENIOR LIVING FACILITY, JUST A MEMBER -- DON’T GO ON A CRUISE, OK? THESE ARE THINGS WE ARE RECOMMENDING. WE DON’T WANT YOU TO GO ON A CRUISE, AND IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TRAVEL, WE WANT ALL NONESSENTIAL TRAVEL TO STOP IF YOU ARE OVER THE AGE OF 60. ALSO, PUBLIC PLACES, AVOID THESE CROWDS, STAY AT HOME AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, CANCEL ALL NONESSENTIAL SURGERY, ALL NONESSENTIAL DOCTORS APPOINTMENTS. THEY ARE JUST COUGHING, THIS VIRUS HAS A PREDILECTION FOR YOUR LUNGS, AS AN OLDER PERSON. ALSO, GET AN EMERGENCY CONTACT, BECAUSE WE WANT YOU TO ALWAYS BE CAREFUL ABOUT THIS, BUT WE ALSO KNOW THAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, IT CAN HAPPEN PRETTY QUICKLY, SO WE WANT YOU TO HAVE AN EMERGENCY CONTACT. AND ALSO, KEEP SEVERAL FEET AWAY FROM PEOPLE, WASH YOUR HANDS A LOT, AND THIS IS MY BIG ONE. GUYS, CELL PHONES, OK, YOU NEED TO WASH YOUR CELL PHONE, AND YOU NEED TO WASH YOUR HANDS, BUT YOU FORGET THAT YOU TOUCH YOUR FACE 23 TIMES AN HOUR, AND YOU HAVE YOUR CELL PHONE, AND YOU JUST TOUCHED YOUR CELL PHONE TO YOUR FACE. WIPE DOWN YOUR CELL PHONE AS MUCH AS YOU WASH YOUR HANDS, AND REALLY, TRY NOT TO USE YOUR CELL PHONE SO MUCH. I THINK THAT IS REALLY PART OF THE PROBLEM. LOOK, I HAVE GOT YOU THROUGH ZEKE, EBOLA, BIRD FLU, H1N1, WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS. CHRISTINA: DR. HEBERT, THANK YOU SO MUCH. CONTINUE SENDING US ALL OF YOUR
