Iowa state softball: West Liberty no-hits Treynor, advances to Class 3A semifinals
FORT DODGE, Ia. — West Liberty quickly and convincingly dispatched of Treynor in the Class 3A state quarterfinals, no-hitting the Cardinals in a 10-0 run-rule victory.
Isabelle True tossed the gem. She consistently hit her spots and made No. 6 Treynor (30-4) uncomfortable in the box en route to her four strikeouts over five innings.
"Earlier in the week, she was having difficulty with her rise-ball," Comets head coach Chad Libby said of True. "She put in a little extra time, we were able to scrimmage on Saturday, and things sort of kept getting better until we got to today. And I thought all four of her pitches were working today for her."
This game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the third. Then, the No. 3 Comets (29-5) unloaded for three runs in that frame, six more runs in the fourth and the final game-winning in the fifth courtesy of Finley Hall.
Haylee Lehman, Austyn Crees and Macy Akers all had two hits apiece. Isabel Morrison's bases-clearing double in the fourth really broke the game open.
The Comets — in their first-ever state tournament — scored 10 earned runs on Treynor pitcher Sydni Huisman; she had allowed only eight earned runs through 203 innings pitched entering Tuesday.
West Liberty will play No. 2 Louisa-Muscatine (34-4) in the semifinals Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
