Another bloody American weekend: Gun violence sees 22 killed in shootings across America - including boy, 16, in Chicago

At least 22 people were killed and more than 50 others were injured in shootings that erupted in multiple cities across the U.S. this weekend.

The deadly weekend included two mass shootings, one on Saturday at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York where 10 people were shot and killed and another on Sunday at a church in southern California where one person was killed and five others were injured.

A 16-year-old was among five people killed in Chicago over the weekend while a six-year-old was shot in the head in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

At least three people were killed in Milwaukee just days after dozens were injured in shootings outside a Milwaukee Bucks game on May 13. 

On Sunday, as thousands of people flocked to an open-air flea market in Houston, a gunfight erupted between a group of five people. Two men were killed in the shooting and three were injured. 

Later that night, seven people were shot in three different locations at shootings across the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  

Several U.S. cities have reported dramatic spikes in deadly violence totals last year. 

Chicago's 797 homicides in 2021 - its highest toll for any year in a quarter century - eclipsed the totals in the two bigger U.S. cities, surpassing Los Angeles' tally by 400 and New York's by nearly 300.

CHICAGO

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder after a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot near 'The Bean' sculpture in downtown Chicago's Millennium Park, which is among the city´s most popular tourist attractions.

The shooting prompted a curfew at the park to combat violence. Officials announced Sunday that minors will not be allowed in the park after 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday without an adult, but they did not comment on how the curfew will be enforced.

The 16-year-old - Seandell Holliday - was shot in the chest near the giant, mirrored structure and was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said. 

The 17-year-old, who was taken into custody following Saturday evening's shooting, also faces charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated battery, police announced Sunday night. He was due in juvenile court Monday.

Another teen, who was allegedly armed with a ghost gun - a weapon that does not have a serial number and can´t be traced - was arrested in connection to the shooting, police said.

In total, 26 minors and five adults were arrested during the gathering in the park on Saturday evening. A total of eight guns were confiscated and five gun arrests were made, police said.

'We must also have zero tolerance for young people carrying firearms or settling petty disputes with acts of violence,' Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement. 'We all must condemn this behavior in the strongest terms possible.'

Hundreds of people were at the park earlier Saturday as part of demonstrations around the U.S. against the recently leaked draft opinion that suggests the Supreme Court is prepared to overturn the nationwide right to abortion. 

It is unclear if the teen who was shot had taken part in the 1 p.m. demonstration, however participants had largely dispersed by late afternoon.

This year, Chicago has recorded 779 shooting incidents and 194 homicides, compared to 898 shootings and 207 homicides during the same period in 2021, according to figures last updated by the Chicago Police Department on May 8. 

Aside from the fatal shooting of Holliday on Saturday, four others were fatally shot in the city since Friday evening, ABC7Chicago reported. 

A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed on the South Side while he was standing on the sidewalk around 7:25 p.m. Friday. He was shot in his chest and armpit area and pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Later on Friday, around 11:30 p.m., two men were shot - one fatally - after their vehicle and collided with the gunman's car. One of the men, 40, was shot in the chest and died Mount Sinai Hospital. The other man was hospitalized in good condition.

On Saturday afternoon, a 34-year-old man was shot several times as he walked on a sidewalk near South Ashland Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. 

Later that evening, a 19-year-old man was shot in the head in a Washington Park home around 5:30 p.m. He later died at the hospital. 

PITTSBURGH, PENNSLYVANIA  

A 6-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot in the head with a firearm Sunday night.

Police and EMS units responded to the 400 block of Johnston Avenue after 8 p.m., the Post-Gazette reported. 

Police said it appears the child was shot by accident. It's not clear how he got access to the firearm, or if the firearm was legal. 

But it was reported that four other people were in the house at the time of the shooting. 

HOUSTON FLEA MARKET SHOOTING

Two people were killed and three others were taken to a hospital with unknown injuries after a gunfight broke out between two groups at a bustling Houston flea market, where thousands of people were shopping on a busy Sunday.

The incident arose from an 'altercation' that involved at least two guns and all five of the people, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. He said no 'innocent bystanders' were injured.

No arrests have been made, but investigators believe one of the people hospitalized was among those who opened fire and two more suspected shooters were detained at the scene and were questioned, a sheriff's deputy told KTRK-TV.

Family members identified one of the victims who died as 29-year-old Juan Romero, who was at the flea market to enjoy his Sunday, just like any other weekend, his sister Yeraldi Romero told KTRK-TV.

Romero said her brother was with their cousin, who is one of the three at the hospital. She said she has questions about how a day at the flea market turned into such tragedy.

'This tragedy happened and I don't know why,' Romero said. 'He always made everyone laugh, very happy, joyful, so it just really hurts because he's my older brother and I look up to him. It's very hard.'

The sheriff said multiple shots were fired and that deputies recovered two pistols from the scene.

Authorities did not immediately provide further information about what led to the shooting but said all the people involved were men in their 20s who appeared to know each other.

BUFFALO SUPERMAKET SHOOTING

Ten people were gunned down at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York on Saturday afternoon in what police are calling a 'racist hate crime.'

Payton Gendron, 18, who is accused of murdering 10 people in a 'racist hate crime ' after firing a barrage of 50 shots at a supermarket in upstate New York reportedly conducted ‘reconnaissance’ at the store before carrying out his attack

Payton Gendron, 18, allegedly opened fire at the supermarket on Saturday afternoon, killing 10 people and injuring three others, before he surrendered to police outside the store. Eleven of the shooting victims are black.

The teen, who claims to identify as a white supremacist, issued several 'clear and hate-filled' statements about his motive and state of mind following his arrest, and admitted that he was targeting the black community when he carried out the massacre, an official confirmed to CNN.

Authorities said Gendron drove to Buffalo from his home several hours away to launch the attack, which he broadcast in real time on social media platform Twitch, a live video service owned by Amazon.com.

He then opened fire at the Tops grocery store using a gun that he legally purchased but had illegally modified with a high-capacity magazine.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn revealed Sunday night that officials are considering charging Gendron with domestic terrorism.

Police and emergency vehicles arrived quickly on the scene and pushed everyone back

Police believe Gendron planned the attack for months before driving three hours to Buffalo to carry out the vile ambush that authorities are calling an act of 'violent extremism' motivated by race.

Investigators, while executing a search warrant at his home on Sunday, also found evidence that the teen had been 'studying' previous hate crimes and shootings before he carried out his own attack.

Gendron, of Conklin, NY, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder following Saturday's attack. He is being held without bail and faces life in prison.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHURCH SHOOTING 

One person was killed and five others were shot at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California, about 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Six people at the house of worship were struck by gunfire after the shooter, said to be an Asian male in his 60s, opened fire at around 1:25 p.m. That man is now in police custody.

The congregants of an Orange County church are being hailed as heroes after they managed to hogtie a gunman who went on a shooting spree on Sunday afternoon in what authorities are describing as an act of 'exceptional heroism and bravery.'

About 40 parishioners witnessed the violence - but those who were present also helped to prevent further bloodshed by overpowering the shooter and tying him up.

The group reportedly confiscated his weapons and restrained him until police arrived on the scene.

Police say those involved 'showed exceptional heroism and bravery in detaining the suspect.'

One person suffered fatal wounds and died at the scene at the church. Four of the other victims were critically wounded - while a fifth suffered minor injuries.

All of the victims were adults and have been revealed to be four men aged 66, 75, 82 and 92 and one woman, aged 86.

A motive for the shooting, which took place in an auditorium called Simpson Hall, rather than the main auditorium where services are normally held, wasn't immediately known - but investigators said they don't believe the gunman lives in the community.

SHOOTINGS IN WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA 

Seven people were injured in shootings in three different locations across Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Sunday night, WSOC reported.

The suffered non-life-threatening injuries and police are investigating the motive behind the shootings, but believe the incidents were not random. 

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN 

Three people, including a 17-year-old boy and two men in their 20s, were killed in three separate overnight shootings in Milwaukee this weekend.

The shootings came a night after a night of violence in which 21 people were shot and wounded in three other attacks in downtown Milwaukee as the Bucks were playing the Boston Celtics.

The shootings prompted authorities to impose an 11 p.m. curfew on Saturday and Sunday.

In the shootings over the weekend, a 21-year-old man died after a shooting near 11th and Rogers streets around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Fox6 News reported.

A 17-year-old boy, who had a gun on him, was killed about 40 minutes later in a shooting that police say might have been related to a robbery. 

Hours later around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the third fatal shooting claimed the life of a 28-year-old man near 19th Street and Lincoln Avenue.

The names of the victims have not been released. Those wounded in Friday's shootings are expected to survive. Police say at least 11 people have been arrested in connection with the shootings.
