Chagrin Falls Intermediate Students Advance to States in Invention Competition: Community Voices

(Chagrin Falls Schools)

Five students from Chagrin Falls Intermediate School will advance to represent Chagrin Falls at the Ohio State level of the Invention League Competition.

Students entered this competition as a result of their efforts in the Invention Convention class. This course is a part of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) program. The goal of STEAM is to expose students to problem-solving, entrepreneurship, post-secondary study, and careers. The focus of the class includes identifying problems, solving problems with critical thinking, and developing and designing a prototype of the invention.

The CFIS Invention League Competition took place on April 12. "This competition encompassed the true STEAM spirit, as the students invented prototypes to solve everyday problems," said Matt Volk, a teacher at Chagrin Falls Intermediate School.

Only 500 students advance to the state level from the 7,000 nationwide who participate. The five students from Chagrin Falls who were chosen to move on to the state level are Liam Buttler in sixth grade, Lena Tucker in fifth grade, Ella Beatty in fourth grade, Sofia De La Cruz in fourth grade, and Coco Brody from the fourth grade. They will attend the Ohio State competition on July 29.
