Maybe the third time's the charm for the Gaston Day volleyball team.

Taking on the team that beat it for the 2018 NCISAA Class 2A state crown, the Spartans earned a measure of revenge Tuesday night in beating Freedom Christian 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-20).

With the win, Gaston Day advances to Saturday’s NCISAA Class 2A state final against Caldwell Academy. Details regarding Saturday’s state title tilt are to be announced.

Boys soccer

Fayetteville Academy 2, Gaston Day 1 (F/2OT): Gaston Day’s defense of its NCISAA Class 2A state soccer title came to an abrupt end on Tuesday, the Spartans falling in double overtime in Fayetteville.

With the state semifinal match tied 1-all, a foul in the box gifted Fayetteville Academy a penalty kick. The Eagles took full advantage of the opportunity, netting the goal sending them to the state championship game and ending Gaston Day’s season.

The Spartans’ season ends with a 6-3 record.

Girls tennis

Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill 5, Gaston Day 4: The Spartans came just short of a berth in the NCISAA Class 2A state title match. Emilee Ibsen, Avery Shaffer and Bennett Jewell each collected singles victories, with the doubles team of Madeleine Singh and Leanne Kelledy also winding up victorious.

Gaston Day’s season ends with an 8-1 record.
