Kalkaska County is announcing its new chief prosecuting attorney. Former prosecutor Michael Perreault retired and step down at the end of July.

Now, they are giving the job to someone who worked along side him, Ryan Ziegler.

Ziegler says, “If he was going to step aside, he wanted to make sure that somebody was here to fill his shoes quickly and make sure there was no gap in our service to the community and he’s done that well.”

Perreault served the county for three terms and Ziegler was the assistant prosecutor.

Ziegler has been preparing for the switch before Perreault’s announced retirement on July 31st.

“I’ve been working closely with him to prepare for this eventuality. I’ve gotten familiar with all the administrative stuff that you normally handles, involved on some of the higher profile cases,” says Ziegler.

Ziegler says Perreault stepped down because of frustrations with staffing and salary concerns.

He says he plans to work those issues out with the board of commissioners.

Ziegler says, “This is going to be a process, I think I have a good case to make that we need a third prosecutor. I think they’ll be understanding of my position… I really don’t think it’s going to be an issue where there’s going to be friction.”

Kalkaska County Clerk, Deborah Hill, says both the clerk’s office and the commissioners are eager to see what he does with the position.

Hill says, “Speaking with Ryan myself he indicated his endeavors are to remain in this area and community and continue serving in that office.”

She says since the transition there has been no hiccups in the county’s case work.

“I truly believe his work ethic and his experiences that will no doubt reflect in the integrity of that office,” says Hill.
