Here in the Coastal Bend, tacos are as quintessential as a classic Whataburger. There's always a go-to place at every other corner.

For many, tacos are a part of the South Texas experience.

Gerald Flores, who owns and operates the popular online store Taco Gear, said tacos are deeply ingrained in Corpus Christi's culture because of the people who live here.

"Tacos remind us of the many meals we share with family and friends at the dinner table," Flores said. "They are a part of our lives in one way or another and for many of us, they are a huge part of our upbringing."

Corpus Christi taco trucks showed off their best taco dishes at the second annual Que Bueno Taco Fest on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019.

As we gear up to celebrate some restaurants in Corpus Christi with free tacos and discounts on National Taco Day 2021, Flores gave us his top five taco spots in Corpus Christi that are perfect to celebrate all-things taco.

Taquitos Mi Tierra

Flores: Everything is good here. The tacos are made with these flavorful tortillas that give something extra to the meat. You'll understand what I'm talking about when you try them, and if you've already had them, you know. I always get an order of tacos de asada (roasted meat) when I go here. You have to get an order of beans to, they are just as amazing and flavorful.

Southside Barbacoa

Flores: In addition to the food, the family that runs this place is one of the reasons I love it. It really feels like you're eating in someone's home. Their flour tortillas are some of the best in the city. While they are known for their barbacoa, their carne guisada (meat with gravy) is also one of the best in the city. My favorite breakfast taco combination from here is the chorizo, egg and bacon.

Where to find it: Southside Barbacoa is located at 5894 Everhart Rd. It's open 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 361-334-0888.

Tacos El Tri

Flores: This late night taco spot is perfect for when you're craving tacos after most places have closed. They are open earlier in the afternoon, but it's the late night stops that have saved my appetite. Asada, pastor, you name it, they have it. Their mollejas (sweet bread) are actually my favorite and not something too many people know about.

Where to find it: Tacos El Tri is located at 5417 S. Staples St. It's open from 6 p.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 361-687-5505.

Taco Bar Street

Flores: This clean and simple looking taco truck serves up some of the best home cooked food. Their taco orders come with a side of rice and beans just like we've grown to love from family gatherings. They're definitely known for their no fluff traditional (and tasty) tacos, but what I love about them are their homemade chips. Get the street nachos while you are there, you'll love them.

Cancun Mexican Restaurant (Yorktown)

Flores: When a restaurant makes really good asada, one that is so flavorful, it makes everything so enjoyable. This place has some delicious street tacos but what is even more fun to eat are their tortas (A sub sandwich on French bread with meat, lettuce and tomatoes). They're packed with so much flavor.

Where to find it: Cancun Mexican Restaurant (Yorktown) is located at 6314 Yorktown Blvd. It's open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, call 361-986-8622.
