LATTNER, Thomas Jefferson Co. I, 19TN
He walked for several months at the war's end before he was reunited with his family in TN. He had enl. at Knoxville in May, 1861. Lattner had been a commission merchant on the riverfront at Chatt., and his business experience was put to use as a commissary sergeant. Wounded near the war's end and spent time in a hospital at Meridian, MS. Joined Consolid. 3TN, Apr. 9, 1865. He was among those who surrendered and were paroled at Greensboro, N.C., in May, 1865. Lattner had fair complexion, dark hair, blue eyes and stood 5'10" tall.
The Lattners lived at Newberry, SC, when he was born Oct. 19, 1822. But they moved to a plantation near Carnesville, GA. His father was Dr. John Valentine Lattner. T.J. Lattner settled at Chatt. in the early 1850s and purchased the old home of Jane Henderson on First St. This house was used by Gen. U.S. Grant as his headquarters. T.J. Lattner resumed his business career in Chatt. and died here March 26, 1884. His wife was Josephine J. They are buried at Citizens Cem. [CTS]

Born c1828. Enl. Aug. 7, 1861, at Cleveland. He had a close call on Dec. 30, 1862, when his horse was killed in action. He was later paid $200 for the loss of his horse. Capt. at Piedmont, VA, on June 5, 1864. He was sent to Camp Morton prison in IN in June of 1864. The following March 3 he died of "hospital gangrene." He was buried in grave 1485 at Green Lawn Cemetery at Camp Morton. Lee was a railroad laborer living at Harrison with his wife, Susan, and their four children prior to the war. [1860HC]

He had a light complexion, brown hair, blue eyes and was 5'7" tall. After the war he married (1859) Lavinia Cummings and they lived on a farm on the side of Lookout Mtn. opposite Moccasin Bend. Born c1838, he was one of the sons of Michael Light and Rhoda Ellis of Lookout Valley. Enl. Aug. 11, 1861, at Chatt. Wounded at Morrison's Depot. Died in prison at Rock Island, IL, in 1864. It was at the Light mill where the Union crossing of Lookout Creek was made at the start of the Battle Above the Clouds. This is at the present-day Reflection Riding.

His first action was seen at St. Rosa Island at Fort Pickens, FL. He fought at Bridgeport, Battle Creek, Fort Donelson, Unionville, Triune, Liberty, Snow Hill and Smithville. Lively was in a hospital for three months with smallpox. Capt. at McMinnville, TN, after he was sent with dispatches from Gen. John Morgan to Gen. Braxton Bragg. Imp. Fort Delaware in June, 1863. He entered the war at 142 pounds and was down to 60 pounds by the time he was released from prison July, 1865. Res. Born 1830 in SC. Farmer at Harrison with wife Almirah and three children. At Chickamauga and was captured shortly thereafter near his home area of Harrison, Sept. 20, 1863 and imp. at Camp Douglas. He told Union authorities he had been loyal, but was forced into the Confederate ranks. He said he desired to take the oath of allegiance. He was released on May 13, 1865. He seems to have been demoted to private.

He was in fighting at Jackson, MS, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. He was wounded in August, 1864 at Jonesboro when his leg was broken but he returned to his unit within 60 days. He was married in 1900 to Lulah Cox. A Baptist, he died at age 84 at his res. on 7th Ave. in East Lake, on Feb. 21, 1930. He was buried at New Liberty Church. [TWP 291, CT Feb. 22, 1930, TP 16,495]

LONG, James Cozby CSN
Born Dec. 2, 1844, son of John Pomfret and Eliza Smith Long, he resigned from the U.S. Naval Academy to join the Confederate Navy, participating in a number of naval fights and was a member of the crew of Curlew, the Merrimac at Hampton Roads, and the Plymouth. At the close of the war he served as a blockade runner. After the war he attempted a life as an engineer and surveyor in Chatt., but relocated at Mussel Shoals, AL, then Birmingham. He married (1872) Frances Walker. Died Chicago, May 26, 1910. [CT Oct. 12, 1890; GHT, 964; NBFM4]
LONG, John Pomfret
Born in Knoxville Nov. 25, 1807, son of William and Jane Bennett Long. He moved to Ross's Landing as a pioneer settler April 18, 1836 and was one of the three commissioners who laid out the town of Chatt. Until the Civil War he practiced law and was a merchant. He was appointed provost marshal of Chatt. by Gen. J. P. McGown. He served until the Federal occupation. At the approach of the Union army, he went south to prepare a place for his family. Mrs. Long and her sons, John P. Long Jr., Milo Smith Long and Marcus B. Long, with their servant, Aunt Clary, and her daughters, were still in town at the time of the battle of Chickamauga. They were living on South Market St. where the Chatt. Choo-Choo is now located. They had to flee just before their frame house was demolished in the turmoil of the aftermath of the Union loss at Chickamauga. Mrs. Long and her children endured the siege, while staying at the home of her brother, Dr. Milo Smith, on the side of Cameron Hill. She once made a personal appeal for food to Gen. James A. Garfield, the future president. He gave her part of his own food--a piece of hardtack and a piece of white meat. A native of Knoxville, John P. Long was Chatt.'s first postmaster and was city recorder. The Longs lived at West Seventh and Cedar after the war. John P. Long lived in Chatt. until his death in 1889. Eliza Smith Long died in 1900. Born March 4, 1847, he was in Chatt. with his mother, Eliza Smith Long, at time of Chickamauga. Joined the Confederate forces (May 5, 1864), though he was barely old enough to enlist. At the battle of Atlanta, July 22, 1864, he had a foot blown off. Rheumatism developed in his other leg so that it was useless to him. He died March 1, 1880, at age 33 of heart disease at his parents' home in Chatt. [GHT, p. 965]

He enl. in the spring of 1861 and went from Knoxville to Cumberland Gap, VA where he was taken ill in early Sept., 1863 and left there. When the Union soldiers arrived, he was taken prisoner. Sent to Johnson's Island and released upon taking the oath of allegiance on June 12, 1865. He was then 26 and was 5'8", blue eyes.

Born about 1828 in Bethel, Fairfield, CT, son of John G. and Naoma Lowe. He built the first iron mill in Chatt. and attempted to manufacture cannon, bridge iron, and armor plates for ships until he was forced to relocate to Selma, AL. He returned to Chatt. after the war, operated a foundry and served as a manufacturer's representative. He also founded Chatt. Paint Co. Presbyterian. His wife was Elsie Elida Tucker whom he married in 1880. Died April 13, 1891 and buried in FH. [CTS; FHR; NBFM7]

MARSH, Edwin
A prominent merchant at Chatt. prior to the war, he supplied uniforms and completely equipped the company organized by Francis Marion Walker. It was first called the "Marsh Blues" in his honor. It was mustered into service as Co. I of the 19th TN Infantry.
Marsh was born at Chatham Co., NC, in 1824, the son of Spencer Marsh. The family moved to Covington, GA, when Edwin Marsh was eight. In Chatt., he and William Adolphus Moore operated the Moore and Marsh dry goods and grocery business. This firm stayed open as long as possible, but the partners finally had to flee to Georgia. Edwin Marsh went directly to Atlanta, where he bought an interest in the Southern Confederate newspaper. After the war, he and Moore were reunited in Atlanta. In 1864, they opened "the first and largest wholesale dry goods house in Atlanta."

MARTIN, Elisha Russell (Rogers?) 2nd Co. K, 1CSA Cav.
Born 1840, son of Russell Martin and Mary Rogers, he was named for his grandfather, Elisha Rogers. Enl. Sept. 20, 1862 in HC and served four years under cavalry leader Joe Wheeler. He was sent on secret mission behind Federal lines and reported captured. After the war, he was a leading Democrat and was active in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He married Catherine Eliza Rogers and they had five sons and five daughters. The family home was on Dry Valley Road in Red Bank. He died March 28, 1900, and was buried in the old family cemetery near Sawyers. [CT March 29, 1900].

Born April 1, 1847 in Warren Co., TN, son of Jesse Martin who also fought for the CSA. Enl. at McMinnville and served under Gen. Dibbrell to the last days of the war, escorting President Davis through Georgia. He was paroled at Washington, GA May 10, 1865. In banking business in Tullahoma and came to Chatt. about 1911. Served at Pensacola, then in the fighting around Corinth, MS, Martin was severely wounded, crippling him for life. In 1866 he moved to Chatt. and with his brothers built up a wholesale grain business. Married Elmira Smith. He married (1877) Alice Gillespie and died April 29, 1887 and was buried at FH. Born at Fredericksburg, VA c. 1825, son of John Lawrence Slaughter and Ann Maria Burton Marye. Attended Hampton-Sidney College and Univ. of VA. Practiced law in Richmond, VA. Served in 1861 as lieutenant in Hampden Arty.; capt. of ordnance under W. W. Loring, and later for Jubal Early and John S. Williams. In 1864 became Inspector of Ordnance under John C. Pemberton. Lived in Shelby County, TN before coming to Chatt. in 1872. Practiced law here until 1877 when he moved to Lynchburg, VA and became editor of the Virginian. MASSENGALE, George Pierce Co. I, 19TN
Born c1844. Though only 17, he followed his older brothers into the Confederate service, enl. in Co. A, Oct. 20, 1861, Cumberland Gap. At Corinth. Became sgt. in QM Dept. and was wounded in the fighting at Chickamauga, falling at his father's farm. He was left among the dead, but survived. CSR: "having been recommended for position of Adjutant of Whitfield's Texas Legion Cav., will report to officer commanding Whitfield's Legion."
MASSENGALE, Henry White
A former mayor of Chatt., he was exempt from war service, but he was an enthusiatic supporter of the Southern cause. He gave a large amount of gold for Confederate bonds at the first offering. Three of his sons, Henry White Masengale, Thomas Masengale, and George Pierce Massengale, served with the Confederate forces. His daughter, Laura Massengale, gave the presentation speech at the Central Hotel at Fifth and Market when the company organized by William Ragsdale marched away to war. Born at Wrightsboro, Ga., in 1808, he married Rebecca Lowe in 1832. She was descended from a prominent Virginia family. The Massengales moved to Chatt. and built a brick house south of town. This house was later purchased by John A. Lee when the Massengales moved to a farm by Chickamauga Creek in Walker Co., Ga. The Massengales were slaveowners and had a large vineyard.

Born Covington, KY. Engaged in railroading before the war. "During the war he was in Cuba as foreman of extensive machine shops. From there he went to Vera Cruz, Mexico where he filled a responsible executive railway position." Returned to US in 1865 and continued in the railroad business. Came to Chatt. in 1879 as superintendent of motive power for the Alabama Great Southern. In 1889 he founded Ross-Meehan Foundry in Chatt. "A typical Irish-American, a gentleman of ready wit, of most engaging manner, and of most remarkable mechanical and business abilities." Meehan married Eleanor Childs. Died Feb. 28, 1908 in Hyde Park, OH, near Cincinnati.

Born c1838 in TN, son of Antipas and Rebecca Frazier Moore. A promising young attorney, res. in 1860 in hh of Tom Crutchfield, he was a bachelor, "a large, handsome man of austere countenance." He led one of the two large companies out of Chatt. in 1861 (the "Marsh Blues"). A member of Co. A, 19TN, he had risen to 2Lt. and then Lt. Col. He was at Shiloh, Corinth and in the fighting around Vicksburg as well as Murfreesboro and Baton Rouge before moving on to Chatt. where he was killed at Missionary Ridge. Born 1829 in SC, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church at Chatt. from 1857 until the outbreak of the war, when he volunteered as chaplain in one of the first Confederate regiments that was formed. After the war, he settled on a farm at Chickamauga Station. He resided there except for a few years when he was pastor of a church at Ringgold, Ga. He died March 6, 1902, leaving a widow and seven children. [CT March 7, 1902]

He had been enl. at Chatt. on Oct. 3, 1862, by William Spears. Moore was captured at Graysville, GA, on June 12, 1864. He was sent to Louisville, Ky., and then on to Rock Island, IL. Afterwards, he rejoined the army and was hospitalized at Richmond, VA in March of 1863. He surrendered at Asheville, NC on May 6, 1865. He was 6' tall with blue eyes.[CSR; RI ledger; 1860HC]

He returned to Greensboro after the war, but moved to Chatt. in 1880 where he entered the wholesale dry goods business. He died in Chatt. Jan. 27, 1907. His wife was Claudia Wingfield Weaver.

MCCOLLUM, JOAB LAFAYETTE Co. D, 6 AL
Born May 10, 1842, son of Joab McCollum and Sarah Wood, he grew up in Dade County, GA and was a friend of John B. Gordon who organized the Raccoon Roughs (Co. D., 6AL Inf.). McCollum enl. in Brown's unit in Montgomery, AL, April 25, 1861 and served throughout the war with this company. He was wounded at the battle of Seven Pines, VA, then served as a nurse in the hospital at Danville, VA in summer, 1862. He was later wounded at Chancellorsville, Spottsylvania and Petersburg. Some of his wounds to the head and limbs were severe. Capt. April 2, 1865 at Petersburg and imp. at City Point.
He married Bettie Ann Holmes, a native of Whitesburg, Ala., on April 19, 1866. McCollum became a prominent railroad agent for the Alabama and Chatt. Railroad and later the Nashville, Chatt. and St. Louis Railroad. He was assigned to Chatt. in the latter part of 1874 as train master and later became agent. The McCollums moved to Atlanta in 1890. He appears to have served as an ordained Presbyterian minister in Nashville about 1905. He died in Atlanta, Dec. 10, 1926 and was buried at FH. [CSR; GHT, pp.970-71; CT Dec. 11, 1926;NBFM8]

Born Jan., 1831 in Grainger Co., he became a merchant in Ringgold. Married Mary M. Donohoo (from Chatt.) in Bentonville, AR, then they returned to Ringgold. Helped organize 26TN. Captured at Fort Donelson. Following exchange at Vicksburg in Sept., 1862, he was not reelected at reorganization, so he joined staff of Gen. John C. Vaughan as AIG and rose to major. McConnell was badly injured at Winchester, VA. After war returned to East TN and became a drummer for a NY wholesale house. Then he and his cousin T. C. McConnell opened general store and later flour mill in Ringgold, GA. To Chatt. in 1875. Practiced law. Appointed (1876) HC Clerk and Master, he served until he became chancellor in 1891, a post he held until his death. He twice sought the governorship of Tennessee. Born c1841 and a farmer at Zion Hill near Ooltewah, he was one of the sons of A.H. and Elizabeth Bryant McGhee to join the 43TN on Oct. 20, 1861, at Ooltewah. The brothers were present during early skirmishing at Chatt. in 1862. Sgt. John McGhee was captured at Vicksburg, July 4, 1863. A.H. McGhee was a native of Granger Co., Tenn. The McGhees had 250 acres and a log six-room home. A. H. McGhee was a farmer and justice of the peace. He died several years before the war. His wife Elizabeth was from NC.

Born about 1829, he was a farmer in Ooltewah prior to the war and the oldest of the McGhee brothers, enl. Dec. 22, 1862 at Ooltewah. He was captured at Vicksburg, July 4, 1863. Prior to the war, he and his wife, Penelope, were living by his mother, Elizabeth Bryant McGhee, in the Zion Hill section of HC.

Born Feb. 22, 1839, son of Alford W. and Susannah Ramsey McNabb who went from Carter County to Bradley County, TN. He was training to be a doctor when the war broke out. Enlisted at Cleveland Dec. 17, 1861 in Capt. John N. Dunn's Co. D. He was a doctor at Georgetown for several years after the war, then moved to Big Spring in Meigs County. Postmaster at Big Spring and helped incorporate the Big Spring Academy. Owned dry goods stores at Big Spring and Lamontville and a livery stable in Dayton. Married Mary Anna Matilda Soloman, 1867. NAIL, Lt. Nicholas Pope Co. A, 19TN
Born April 28, 1822 in Bledsoe Co., son of John and Fannie Nail. He grew up in the Sequatchie Valley near Pikeville and had lived at Bradley County prior to coming to Chatt. in 1853. His first wife was Susan, and his second wife was Georgie Anna Kemper of Giles Co. whom he married in 1856. He was a tinner by trade.
He took part in the campaigning in eastern KY under Gen. Zollicoffer in 1861 and in the Battle of Fishing Creek, where his regiment opened the battle by attacking a superior force. Originally a wagonmaster, Nail won a commission as 2Lt. and participated in the battles of Shiloh and those around Corinth in the late spring of 1862. In the battle of Baton Rouge, Aug. 5, 1862, he was shot through the spine and the left forearm. When the surgeon was unable to remove the ball. Nail had to submit his resignation and was replaced by another Hamilton Countian, Richard P. James. After he returned home, he was arrested by Federal authorities and charged with sheltering Confederate spies at his home. He was released and his home on Missionary Ridge was occupied by General Bragg who warned the Nail family to flee just prior to the Missionary Ridge fighting. The family refugeed to Columbus, GA.
Nail had a stove and tinware business on lower Market
Street after the war and served as city marshal. A charter member of the Walnut Street Christian Church, he survived until March 3, 1902. He was bothered by the pain of his war injuries and he had lost his eyesight and was an invalid at the time of his death.

Born in 1849 at Cleveland, Tenn., he was the son of Nicholas Pope Nail and his first wife, Susan. At age 16 he enl. the last year of the war after his family had refugeed to Columbus, GA. He was in the engagements in and around Atlanta and at Macon. He was at Savannah six weeks, then was captured and paroled in May 1865.
He returned to Chatt. and married Mollie Gray in 1871. They resided at 1022 Peachtree St. in Ridgedale. He was a deputy sheriff in 1917 when he accidentally was shot in the foot and it had to be amputated. [JWilson Nail family, TP 16,176;1910HC]

Born in McDonough, GA, June 19, 1838, he was the son of Allenson Nelms and Frances Melvina Williams. The family moved to Texas when he was an infant, then Henry Co., TN. He married (Dec., 1860) Emma Marlin in Nashville and they resided in Chatt. where he worked for the RR. He raised Co. D, but refused to serve as its captain. He fought at Fishing Creek, Shiloh and Corinth and then was discharged May 5, 1862. He raised another company, Co. A, 10th Kentucky Cavalry, and served under Gen. John Hunt Morgan, participating in Morgan's last raid and the fights at Mount Sterling and Cynthiana. He left TN and settled in Campbell Co., GA which he represented in the legislature, then became "keeper" of the state penitentiary, then U.S. marshal for N. GA. He also served as mayor of West End, GA, county commissioner and sheriff of Fulton County. He married his second wife, Lillie Lee, in 1881. [Evans, CSA 8:881-83.]

NEWMAN, William T. Co. H, 2TN Cav. (Ashby's) Sgt.-1Lt.
Born June 23, 1843 in Knoxville, he was the son of Henry B. Newman. By 1860 young Newman was a law clerk in Chatt. living in the hh of lawyer John A. Minnis. When TN seceded Newman first joined the Lookout Rangers, then transferred to Co. H, 2TN Cav. in which he rose to 2Lt. and fought at Fishing Creek, Perryville, Murfreesboro and in Pegram's Kentucky raid in which he was wounded and captured. Imp. Camp Chase and Johnson's Island. After his exchange Newman fought at Chickamauga, Wheeler's Tennessee raid and the Atlanta campaign, losing his arm in the battle of Jonesboro, July 30, 1864. After the war, he returned to Knoxville, then moved to Atlanta to resume the study of law. He became city attorney for Atlanta in 1871 and in 1886 was appointed federal judge for N. GA. He married Fanny Alexander Percy. [Evans, CSA, 8:888-89.]

He enl. Oct. 17, 1861, at Ooltewah. He died April 3, 1862, in Knoxville. [Brooks gives death date as March 4, 1862] Before the war, he and his wife, Sarah J., had a farm at Limestone north of Harrison. His parents were Henry and Judith Norman, who were from NC. He relocated in Chatt., becoming a bookkeeper and a member of NBF Camp. Died here June 26, 1890, having been nursed by J. N. Payne, "both having belonged to the Washington Artillery." Buried CSA Cem.
