A First Look at the New Steak Grill From Meat Master Pat LaFrieda

He and the German company Otto Wilde have engineered an unconventional method for grilling beef.

Pat LaFrieda’s new grill, which looks like a toaster oven, can heat up to 1,500F in two minutes.

Pat LaFrieda, the third-generation butcher and eponymous meat purveyor, is one of the biggest names among American foodies. He sells beef to elite New York spots such as Union Square Cafe, Beatrice Inn, and Marea, and provides the burgers for Shake Shack worldwide. (He even helped train the staff in Dubai on how to cook the patties.) He sells about $200 million worth of meat a year.

You’d think that by now, he’d have his own line of branded merchandise. “Over the years, I’ve been approached by just about every grill company you can think of to stick my name on something,” LaFrieda says. But he never found one he liked, including a big-name $14,000 model that broke down on him after a year.
