Alert! Why you need to be careful with sanitizers while working in kitchen
With coronavirus pandemic in place, people have increased their usage of sanitizers and hand rubs. With the presence of alcohol, sanitizer is said to kill the germs and bacteria present on your hands. Doctors and health experts across the world too are prescribing people to practice hand hygiene, by using soap and sanitizers in order to keep COVID-19 at bay.
What most people don’t know is the harmful effects of sanitizers.
Due to the presence of alcohol in it, sanitizers can turn fatal when exposed to fire. A similar case was reported in Rewari, when a 44-year-old man suffered from 35% burns after his sanitizer bottle spilled on his clothes which caught fire due to his proximity with the kitchen stove.

As quoted by ANI, Dr. Mahesh Mangal, Chairman, Dept of Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi recommended people to not use sanitizers near fire and gas stoves as they are highly inflammable liquids.
With a presence of 62% ethyl alcohol, sanitizers have their own health hazards. Thus, storing them properly and keeping them away from fireplaces is an important thing to keep in mind.

In order to prevent such a scenario and keep yourself and your family safe, you can take the following precautions:
  1. Keep sanitizers away from the reach of small children
  2. Keep sanitizers stored in a proper bottle
  3. Keep sanitizer bottles away from kitchen and never apply it while standing in kitchen
  4. Avoid using sanitizers while at home and always wash your hands with soap and water
  5. Apply sanitizer only in a case of emergency or while you are out and have no access to soap and water
  6. Apply sanitizer properly on your hands and make sure it dries completely
  7. Wash your hands with soap before entering your kitchen or where fire it being lit
  8. People who cook are recommended to wash their hands before cooking or being near the stove
