Coronavirus Concerns on the Fourth of July

A day ahead of the Fourth of July, several events throughout Michigan have been canceled or rescheduled due to the coronavirus. The annual fireworks in Rochester Hills have been postponed indefinitely this year. Fireworks in Royal Oak have been cancelled for 2020 due to the coronavirus. Dearborn's fireworks, typically hosted at Greenfield Village, have been canceled.

However, concerns remain across the country about the potential the Fourth of July holiday could have in terms of spreading the coronavirus.

The Trump administration is planning fireworks displays Friday at Mount Rushmore and Saturday in Washington on the Mall, where mask-wearing will be voluntary.

The nation has seen record high daily cases this past week and, on Thursday, hit a staggering 50,700 cases reported in a single day. A handful of states began reversing plans to reopen businesses as outbreaks surged.

California's governor issued shutdown orders affecting most of the state with a three-week closure of bars and dine-in restaurants as well as beach closures over the holiday weekend. In Michigan, a state that at one point was on track to have even fewer restrictions during the Fourth of July holiday, there now remains talk of reversing such plans. Earlier in the week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced indoor alcohol sales would not be permitted in lower Michigan.

Several states, including Florida and Georgia, on Thursday broke their existing daily records for new coronavirus cases. Florida reported 10,109 new cases, up from 6,563 cases on Wednesday, the 25th consecutive day that state has set a record high in its seven-day rolling average. Georgia reported 3,472, up from 2,946 on Wednesday.

Michigan reported what had been its largest single-day spike in new coronavirus cases since May. The state reported 543 new cases of the virus on Thursday, as well as an additional 15 deaths attributed to the virus. According to the state, 13 of the 15 deaths were identified via a Vital Records search.
