Texas High School Football: Sinton's Davis filling in key role

SINTON — Daelyn Davis simply took advantage of an opportunity last week.

Davis, a 6-foot-4 Sinton wide receiver, has spent much of this year blocking on the outside of the Pirates’ run-heavy offense helping to pave the way for teammates Rene Galvan and Rylan Galvan. But in last week’s Class 4A area round playoff game against Giddings, the Pirates coaching staff knew the passing game had to be a factor because the Buffaloes were prepared to slow down Sinton’s vaunted running game.

So Davis responded by catching three passes for 67 yards, including two for touchdowns. It was a breakout game for the passing portion of Sinton’s offense as quarterback Rene Galvan completed 7 of 12 for 147 yards and the two touchdowns to Davis.

“At first we were more run-based and didn’t really know what we could do and we weren’t really comfortable,” Davis said. “But as we got deeper into the season we know that we have to use the passing game and we’ve started to get comfortable in it and it’s came out to be pretty good.”

Sinton's Daelyn Davis catches a touchdown pass against Giddings in a Class 4A Division II area round game in Cuero, Texas on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020.

Sinton head coach Mike Troutman said the team always game plans to throw the ball but at times this season with the running game so successful, the receivers have spent much of their time blocking. But Troutman said as the Pirates continue to progress in the postseason the passing game will make a difference.

“We know that we like to get Daelyn one on one and we like to get a good matchup with him,” Troutman said. “It just happened in the games we were playing during the season our running game has been so successful we really haven’t needed to go to it. We knew (against Giddings) we were going to have to throw the ball and that was going to be a difference maker.”

Davis leads the team in receptions with 26 and receiving yards with 449 and five touchdowns. He is also averaging 17.3 yards a catch this season. Along with Davis, Rylan Galvan is used in the screen game and has 15 catches for 337 yards and Joe Cruz caught 10 passes for 125 yards and touchdown this season.

The numbers of Davis and teammates may not be eye-popping but he said he has no problem blocking and is looking for team success more than individual success.

“I’m more of a team player and more happy if we are winning,” Davis said.

Troutman said the key for the Pirates’ passing game is to take advantage of the opportunities presented them. Throughout much of this season, Davis and other receivers have done that.

“Those guys are the most unselfish guys and when you are a dominant run team you ask those guys to block and they unselfishly go out and block,” Troutman said. “When we throw the ball you have to make the best out of that opportunity and you have to catch it.”

Sinton's Daelyn Davis catches the ball at the game against Rockport-Fulton, Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, in Sinton. Davis scored a touchdown.
