The islands are still working to become their own entity. Starting a new city means there is a lot of ground to cover and they’re trying to make sure they do it the right way.

In November they learned they can survive on their own. Monday night, Islanders were shown exactly how a new police department could be operated and how much it will cost.

“Why is police protection important. it’s critical,” Incorporate The Islands, Treasurer, Ralph Maggioni said.

Although they say the Chatham County Police Department is doing the best they can, they believe they need more.

“We’re talking about the cost of police cars, uniformed officers, detectives, down to the belts that they wear,” incorporate The Islands, President, Adam Avant said.

Estimating a proposed budget of 4.5 million dollars for a police department. That includes equipment, cars, uniforms, and salaries.

“What we’re trying to do is look at police protection because it will be part of a city in the future. so we need to look at the expenses,” Maggioni said.

They say their goal is to provide the highest level of service for the lowest cost. But policing isn’t the only service they’d need or provide. Fire and ems, city administration, public works, and community development are all listed in the study. They’re only required to provide three, however, Avant believes they’re capable of five.

“We are required by the state to provide at least three services, any less what are you doing. The 5 that we are focusing on are in the feasibility study, listed as feasible and their expenses are included,” Avant says.

Right now the bill is in the hands of the legislature if passed they will be on the ballot for incorporation. They should hear more on the status by the end of the legislative session on March 28.
