Alabama adds 700+ coronavirus cases, 4,743 in last 14 days as testing ramps up

Orange Beach Memorial Day

Crowds at Alabama’s public beaches were modest this Memorial Day afternoon, with strong winds, overcast skies and single red flags keeping people away.

The number of coronavirus cases in Alabama now tops 15,000 with 716 new cases reported since yesterday.

The Alabama Department of Public Health’s May 26 10:30 a.m. numbers show 15,194 cases in the state, 4,743 reported in the last 14 days. The state has tested 192,602 people to date, 72,489 in the last 14 days. The overall positive rate for all those tested is 7.9%, a figure that drops to 6.5% in the last two weeks.

Counties showing the biggest increases were Montgomery (+123); Tuscaloosa (+67); and Bullock and Walker, each with +40. Each of those counties showed an increase yesterday but ADPH has not responded to questions about delays in reporting cases related to the Memorial Day holiday.

Alabama has 566 COVID deaths, an increase of 15 from the last fatality total released on May 24.
