Bass great Bob Magnusson to be saluted at free Dizzy’s concert
In 2014, bass great Bob Magnusson was forced to cut back his live performances to just once a week because of his acute osteoarthritis.
Now, no longer to meet his own exacting musical standards, he has stopped playing concerts altogether, although he continues to teach bass at San Diego State University and several other local colleges.
Magnusson’s many past collaborators include jazz legends (Buddy Rich, Sarah Vaughan, Freddie Hubbard), pop and rock stars (Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Madonna) and orchestras (the San Diego Symphony and the Las Vegas Symphony),
On Sunday, Feb. 24 he’ll be saluted at a free, all-ages show at Dizzy’s. The lineup, led by bassist and SDSU grad student Mackenzie Leighton, includes Peter Sprague, Rob Thorsen, Duncan Moore, Ed Kornhauser, Tripp Sprague and Sean Hicke, plus a possible surprise guest or two. The afternoon begins with an hour for socializing, followed by the concert.
“Celebrating Bob Magnusson”: 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. Dizzy’s, Arias Hall (behind the Musician’s Association building), 1717 Morena Blvd., Bay Park. Free. (858) 270-7467. dizzysjazz.com
