Family is usually always worth traveling for. There is nothing better than seeing that uncle or grandparent that you haven’t seen in 10 years. But then you realize why you haven’t seen them in 10 years when they comment on how “big you’ve gotten.” Sometimes though it’s good to just get away for a bit. A spur-of-the-moment trip can do wonders for your mind and body.

As soon as Americans are allowed back in Japan without quarantining or otherwise I’m on the next flight. I love it there. I haven’t gotten a chance to really explore Osaka/Kyoto as deep as I’d like, and as much fun as Tokyo is you can never do everything there.

I take a foreign vacation yearly and typically two domestic ones throughout the year. I haven’t been able to travel for leisure since Nov ‘19, so I’m really itching to get back into travel.

Visiting Family In Germany

Most of my family is vaccinated now. just waiting on my little dude to get his second dose and we’re all good.

That being said, I’m ready to travel. I still hate flying (always have), but I’m ready to get back to serious road tripping. The pandemic has made me rethink my avoidance of flying and the importance of visiting family in Germany. I think next year will be the year that I fly my family there to see visit my older family members that cannot easily travel anymore and finally fulfill the promise of visiting France that I made to my wife over 20 years ago.

Family Reunion In Tennessee

My family is having a reunion at the end of July in Gatlinburg, TN - just a stone’s throw from the northern end of the famous Tail of the Dragon.

Driving The Dragon is a bucket list item for me, but I want to drive it in my own car, which means I’d have to drive my 2021 Camaro 1600+ miles each way to get there, but my SO will have a class finishing that week, meaning it would be 3200 miles of solo driving, not counting wherever I went while I was there.

It’s also just about the worst possible time of the year for me to take a week off, but I doubt I’d ever have this obvious an excuse to visit that part of the world again.

Anniversary Trip

Looks like this year Mrs. DTOTA and I will be able to take our anniversary trip this fall (our anniversary is in September, but we usually do the trip in October since I’m busy working races in September). And usually, we travel someplace where there are wineries. Our 2019 trip was to Paso Robles and I wouldn’t mind going back; there are quite a few places we didn’t get to and at least one or two I wouldn’t mind visiting again.

That trip was actually my first to the area since I dropped out of Cal Poly SLO. I’d forgotten how beautiful it is.

During the Pandemic, we only traveled to my moms and my dads (different places in TX and we required they test neg before we would go) and a few camping grounds in TX and OK. Mostly because our five year old needed to get out and about. My wife and I have both been fully vax’d since Christmas (she works in healthcare and we also own a piece of the practice so we got in early). Our 15 year will have her second shot next week. This summer we are driving from Texas to Yellowstone/Jackson/Tetons for a week long trip. Next week my wife and I are flying to PHX to see my best friend for a weekend getaway and finalize some of our outings for Yellowstone (White water and taking his and my 5 year olds on their first fishing expedition.) We really only missed our annual adult ski trip that we usually take Jan or Feb each year and then my dude trip to KC for Chargers @ Chiefs. I love driving on long trips but I also love flying. Usually the only factor that makes one better than the other is cost and amount of time we have budgeted.

Le Mans. I’ve wanted to go to the race for almost 20yrs since I first saw coverage on NBC when I was in my early teens. I’m finally at a point in my career I can afford to travel and take these types of trips. I was planning to go last year and had everything planned out before the pandemic hit. I’m dead set on going this year.

Honestly, we never stopped living as we had before. Had the inconvenience of masks at the grocery store and in airports but that’s about it. Didn’t have the choice with work, wife and I have been in the office. Been to Mexico, which was nice. It’s not a big deal, they just test the day before you get on the plane to come back. Been on a couple of long weekends. We leave for Disney World on Thursday afternoon. Still alive, no worse for wear.

I have a flight to NYC booked for a week long vacation in September. I don’t know if I’d do the same flight and trip today, but by September I think enough people will be vaccinated that my risk will be pretty low.

Road Trip Soon

Road Trip Soon

I’ll drive anywhere in this country before I will get on another plane unless it’s a major time crunch. Flying is fine, I just hate all the BS that surrounds it, when I can just jump in the car and go at my pace and see things along the way that you can’t from the sky. I just got back from a road trip to Colorado and heading off on another one to North Carolina this weekend. Vacation the main objective, but I’ll still gladly drive across the country to pick something up, just to turn around and drive back. The drive is part of the vacation to me.

Back To Europe

Europe is worth travelling for. When flights return to affordable, when I can return to Canada without a mandatory hotel stay and $3000 bill, I will be in France so fucking fast. I’ll have a rental car pre-booked and my wife and I will be driving around the EU.
