A mysterious explosion rattled Tennessee with many residents reporting that they heard a loud noise and felt the 'ground shake'.

In a black-and-white surveillance video from around 9.50pm on Saturday a loud boom can be heard in the distance as the footage darkened and then flashed a bright white light a moment later.

In the clip from WKRN, nothing on the idle street in Clarksville, a northern Tennessee city, appeared to move.

Many people in Clarksville called the local police department to report what officers are calling an 'unknown phenomena'.

On Sunday morning, the Clarksville Police Department confirmed that 'the sound was heard across many parts of Montgomery County'.

Clarksville resident Stephanie Rattray told WTVF: 'A lot of people are obviously saying the conspiracy theory of aliens because you’ve got to have some crazy in the mix.'

The police department said that there were 'no reports of any injuries or property damage' and the US Geological Survey did not register an earthquake in the area.

'The Clarksville Police Department, Fire Department, Montgomery County Sheriffs Office and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) searched for a couple of hours but were unable to locate the source,' it added.

The police also noted that Fort Campbell, the nearby Army base, was on a four-day weekend and due to the Labor Day holiday 'does not appear to be conducting any type of training or exercise'.

In turn, the source of the puzzling boom remained a mystery.

'It's kinda funny that it's the biggest thing right now,' Rattay said.

'It think it was probably someone playing around with Tannerite because it's Labor Day weekend and everyone wants to have fun,' she told the WTVF.

Fellow resident Dee Baoz thought the distant boom was a boat explosion but didn't see anything when she looked down the Cumberland River.

However, she noted a strange smell and said it was 'not a normal kind of odor'.

'It was just so odd,' Boaz added.

'Currently, this seems to be some sort of unknown phenomena until someone reports actual damage,' the police department wrote on Facebook.

Nearly 300 people rushed to the comments of the post to brainstorm an explanation.

Many said the incident 'felt like an earthquake' and noted that this wasn't the first time a loud noise accompanied by ground shaking caused worry among Clarksville's more than 158,100 residents.

One commenter attributed the incident to a sonic boom 'from air pockets collapsing underground,' while another predicted it was a meteorite erupting.

Other users were chilled by the phenomena because of how much it resembled the bomb that destroyed downtown Nashville on Christmas Day last year.

The 2020 explosion took place about 50 miles away from Clarksville and was a deliberate crime executed by 63-year-old Anthony Quinn Warner.

Warner purchased the explosive chemicals with a credit card and the result injured at least eight people. Investigators never found a motive.
