“Love will find a way through paths where wolves fear to prey.”–Lord Byron

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”–Charles M. Schulz

You don’t need a fancy, expensive dinner to impress your Valentine, you just need to cater to what he or she loves to eat. And if one of those foods is pizza, you’re in luck. Some restaurants and pizza chains make heart-shaped pizzas, which totally up the romance factor of the fast food staple. You’ll be pleased to know that Papa Murphy’s-Ukiah sells heart-shaped pizza. Just remember to order ahead of time.

Ukiahi music fundraisers

The Ukiahi honor band hopes to attend a Music Festival in the Bay Area and perform with Humboldt State in May and they must raise funds to do these great activities.

First is a “Valentine’s Day Swing Dance” on Valentine’s Day, 8:30-9:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge (1200 Hastings Road, Ukiah). Entrance by donation! It’s going to be super fun. By starting at 8:30, people can join the young musicians after a Valentine’s dinner to burn off some calories.

“Laughter for the Arts” is Feb. 29 at Ukiah High School Cafetorium/Rowland Nielson Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 6 p.m., comedy starts at 7. If you arrive at 6, Slam Dunk will be selling pizza and the choir and jazz band will perform. The comedians begin at 7 p.m., starting with Gina Stahl-Haven who recently won the SF Comedy competition, and headlining is Eric Blake who has been on Comedy Central, HBO, Showtime and BET. Kudos

From retired Ukiahi teacher/coach Gary Cavender: “For the last six years Willits football has had a complete losing culture. This year Willits had a good group of seniors and a “new sheriff in town,” head coach Brandon Norbury.

“Brandon had the kids weight training since about the middle of last March. Brandon brought in two seasoned coaches: Offensive Coordinator Bill Norbury and Defensive Coordinator Gary Cavender.

“Things came together, and Willits put together an outstanding season. We prayed together, sweat together, laughed together, and worked very hard together!

“Great season, great memories. It was the first home playoff game in 15 years against a much larger school and we won. The team that won our section championship also won the California state championship.

“On the field we try to create athletes that are conditioned, respected, powerful and fierce forces…forces to be reckoned with. Off the field we train young men to be sensitive and kind. Leave it on the field, gentlemen!”

Cavendar was installed as the new pastor at Calpella Community Church on Aug. 19, 2018.

Give something to those who gave. There’s a great program where people can donate tickets to events to veterans (such as entertainment, baseball, football or other athletic events, etc.). So if you find you cannot attend something, you can give your ticket – which supports and gives recognition to veterans for their service – by going to: https://www.vettix.org/ref/2350121

Busy hands for others

Caroline Crowley leads the ministry “Stitches from the Heart” at First Presbyterian Church-Ukiah.

She explained, “We’ve been around for six years! It’s a group of women who knit and crochet shawls for anyone who may need comfort or a hug from God. As we knit and crochet the shawls, we are praying for the recipients (whomever that may be). In 2019, we handed out 45 items for births, weddings, healing, illness, loss and comfort.

“The ministry has had the wonderful opportunity of reaching beyond the walls of the church. We have connected with a group of women from Napa and Sonoma counties to make lap blankets and prayer shawls for our veterans.  Every three months Lillian Wohlfarth from Cloverdale travels to the different county locations and picks up the blankets and shawls made for the veterans and delivers them to the San Francisco Veterans Hospital, Ukiah and Santa Rosa Clinics and the Yountville VA Home. She has received many thanks of appreciation and gratitude for the shawls and blankets. We’ve also made shawls for our local Hospice organization.

“This ministry does touch people’s hearts and comforts them beyond our understanding

“If you would like to be a part of this wonderful ministry, the two groups meet on Saturday or Wednesday.

“If you don’t know how to knit or crochet, we can teach you.  Also, you don’t have to commit to coming each month. If you knit or crochet, you can make these from the comfort of your home, then donate them to the ministry.” For more information, contact Carolyn at (707) 462-8460 or prcfcrow@pacific.net
