College football scores, NCAA top 25 rankings, Week 2: Texas' Ehlinger, Oklahoma's Rattler dominant in wins

The Big 12 began the day with an awful showing as Iowa State and Kansas State each lost at home to Sun Belt foes. But the league's powers brought plenty of force later in the day as Oklahoma and Texas both cruised to easy wins. The Sooners jumped out to a 31-0 first quarter lead over Missouri State and glided to a 48-0 victory, while Texas scored on its first offensive play en route to a 59-3 win over UTEP.

Both programs have league title and College Football Playoff aspirations behind quarterbacks who are expected to have big seasons, and both delivered impressive opening performances. Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler completed 14-of-17 passes for 291 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions while playing only two quarters in his first start for the Sooners. Not to be outdone, Texas' Sam Ehlinger threw for 429 yards and five touchdowns ... in one half.

The two were among the standouts from the first Saturday of college football that featured Power Five teams in action. The day included upsets, thrilling finishes and plenty of highlights. CBS Sports covered it all.

Half: Coastal Carolina 28, Kansas 3

For crying out loud, Coastal Carolina was picked to finish last in the Sun Belt. Not sure what else to say.

Final: Texas Tech 35, Houston Baptist 33

Houston Baptist entered with 15 total victories in six seasons since it became a full-fledged FCS program following a "developmental" season in 2013. This was the program's first-ever game against a Power Five program. Boy, was it memorable. The Huskies were 40-point underdogs but went toe-to-toe with Texas Tech in this battle of air raid teams.

HBU QB Bailey Zappe's final line: 30-49, 567 yards, 4 TDs and 0 INT. You would think TTU's defense might have been ready for such an aerial attack considering the offense they practice against throws it just as much. TTU's Alan Bowman finished with 430 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT on 38 of 52 passing.

Close game alert!

Houston Baptist just scored with 3:13 left to cut the Texas Tech lead to 35-33. Failed the two-point conversion. But they have all three timeouts. Yes, this is the same Houston Baptist that lost 57-31 to North Texas last week.

Final: Louisville 35, Western Kentucky 21

The Cardinals looked a bit shaky at times in the second half but took care of business against what should be a pretty good WKU team. Micale Cunningham's final line is 19 of 34 for 343 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT. This throw here could have been a second INT if the safety had actually attacked the ball. Instead, he sat back and waited on it. Dez Fitzpatrick ran underneath it and took it to the house for Louisville's final score of the game.

Final: Clemson 37, Wake Forest 13

The Tigers played reserves for much of the second half and cruised after taking a 27-0 lead into the half. All 13 of Wake Forest's points came in the fourth quarter. Trevor Lawrence's final line: 22 of 28, 351 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT and 2 rushing touchdowns. Travis Etienne ran 17 times for 102 yards and a touchdown. Also caught three passes for 47 yards. Fun to see Dabo's son, Drew, catch a pass (not the guy in this highlight).

Final: Tulane 27, South Alabama 24

South Alabama was going to get the ball back until it was whistled for a penalty when a player jumped over the wedge as Tulane attempted to punt it away with 1:31 left. Tough loss for the Jaguars to break in their new stadium. They led 24-6 at one point but fall to 1-1 following their season-opening victory over Southern Miss last week.

A less-than-inspriring effort for Texas Tech tonight against a Houston Baptist team that is 18-56 since joining the FCS level in 2013. The Red Raiders just went ahead 28-20 late in 3Q. But plenty of time left.

Half: Texas 45, UTEP 3

Sam Ehlinger tosses for a cool 429 yards 5 TDs in the first half. Would surely imagine his night is over. That's the most-ever in a half for a Texas QB. ICYMI, see below for what happened on his first throw of the game.

Half: Louisville 28, Western Kentucky 7

Excellent half for Louisville vs. a WKU team that went 9-4 last season and returned a bunch of starters. Game seems to have gone under the radar a bit. But that kind of seems to be Louisville's MO under Scott Satterfield. Micale Cunningham is 13-of-21 for 229 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs. Also has a rushing TD.

Half: Clemson 27, Wake Forest 0

The Tigers have been pretty surgical so far. Trevor Lawrence is 18-of-24 for 261 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, has two running TDs and has connected with eight receivers. Travis Etienne has run 15 times for 94 yards. Team looked good in the hurry-up to add a field goal as time expired.

Final: Georgia Tech 16, Florida State 13

The Yellow Jackets go on the road with a freshman QB, miss two field goals and an XP and still manage to spoil Mike Norvell's debut. FSU scored a TD on its first possession and never reached the end zone again. What a win for Geoff Collins to start year two.

FSU found something with this package involving Jordan Travis at QB. He's a redshirt sophomore whose played sparingly after starting his career at Louisville. Doesn't look like Mike Norvell trusts him in the pass game, but he's helped them cross midfield here. 'Noles down 16-13 with 6:00 to go. Blackman back in at QB.

Wow! Georgia Tech's Jude Kelley just hit a 31-yarder to put the Yellow Jackets up 16-13 with 8:56 left. GT capitalizes on an FSU fumble and FINALLY makes a FG after having two FGs and an XP blocked.

Oklahoma's not the only Big 12 favorite getting off to a fast start against a warm-up opponent. How about this for Texas' first offensive play of the game against UTEP: a 78-yard touchdown pass from Sam Ehlinger to Joshua Moore.

Important score alert: Georgia Tech 13, FSU, 13

Now 11:35 remaining. The Yellow Jackets could have gone ahead on Malachi Carter's touchdown reception, but they missed the extra point. FSU had already blocked a pair of FGs. Special teams are the only reason why the Seminoles aren't trailing.

End 3Q: Florida State 13, Georgia Tech 7

The Yellow Jackets finally got on the board in the third with a 19-yard TD run by Jordan Mason to cap a 14-play, 80-yard drive. FSU hit a 53-yard FG with 1:04 left in the quarter after another drive stalled out. Suffice it to say, Mike Norvell's offense could have used spring practice.

It does not appear that the Sooners are too bothered by the absences of several players due to COVID-19 protocols and other reasons. Spencer Rattler threw for 199 yards and 3 TDs in the opening quarter.

It hasn't gotten a lot of coverage today, but this Campbell-Georgia Southern game has been awesome. The Eagles -- down 30+ players! -- erased a 20-6 deficit and scored 21 straight points to make it 27-20. But Campbell marched right back and quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams made some exceptional plays and threw a nice touchdown pass with 15 seconds left. However, Georgia Southern stopped a two-point conversion. A little drama at the end with the onside kick, but the Eagles come away with the 27-26 win. What a fun game.

Final: UTSA 51, Texas State 48

Wow, in what takes the cake for thriller of the day, UTSA survives in overtime after Texas State roared back from 13-down in the final four minutes of regulation. Texas State MISSED an extra point after a 91-yard punt return with 1:16 left. Because of the miss, the game went to OT. The same kicker missed a 20-yarder in the second OT, which allowed UTSA to survive with a victory. Here's the aforementioned punt return.

Florida State up 10-0 on Georgia Tech as we near the start of the second half. Lots of missed opportunities for both sides, especially Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets had four opportunities to get points on the board in the first half. The results? Two interceptions, two blocked field goals. There's no denying the bees are a little better this year, but that's a lot of missed opportunities. Florida State star Marvin Wilson has both of the field goal blocks. Meanwhile Asante Samuel Jr. has two interceptions.

Texas State, down 34-28, is driving late in the fourth quarter against UTSA. Game is on ESPN2 if you need a little pick-me-up as we hit a lull in today's action.

Update: Jeremiah Haydel just returned a punt 90 yards for a TD for Texas State with 1:16. But the Bobcats mixed the extra point….which would have put them ahead. Wow!

Oklahoma is a massive favorite over Missouri State, and should be fine regardless, but word is that the Sooners are missing a whopping 17 players. Some are due to COVID-19, some are due to suspension. But the exact numbers aren't clear. In any case, the biggest names would appear to be T.J. Pledger, who would be RB1 for this game, and kicker Gabe Brkic.

Final: Notre Dame 27, Duke 13

This was a fairly clean debut for both teams considering how warped the offseason was. Not a ton of penalties or turnovers for either side. Duke will regret that two early trips inside the Notre Dame 10-yard line only resulted in field goals. And the Irish really only got one RB going in Kyren Williams. If you were hoping to draw a major conclusion about Notre Dame's CFP chances from this one, good luck. It was just a routine, take-care-of-business win. One noteworthy stat: Ian Book's 19 completions went to seven different players. There are questions about how talented the playmakers are on this Notre Dame team, but Book looked comfortable distributing it to several guys.
