Hey, look us over

News of the latest high profile properties to change hands on the Boothbay peninsula, and the plans to invest in them, inspire the question, could Wiscasset be next?

    It should be.

It has spots open on the corridor of visibility, Route 1. The opposite of Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility, this road ensures a business will be seen, and considered, as a stop for anyone going most anywhere along the Midcoast.

And Maine's prettiest village, on and off Main Street, is a gem not tucked away. Its events, from early bird sales and Holiday Marketfest to art walks, attract people who plan to attend and others who discover the events while passing through. Again, if you've got what people want, visibility pays, and Route 1 has it.

Prospective developers, do not let the infamous bottleneck deter you: Times are changing due to the state's moves and, besides, tourists from outside Maine sit in traffic. That's a normal day for them. Just listen to Boston radio station WBZ 1030's "traffic on the three's," a new update every 10 minutes. It can take a long time to go a short way.

No town planner? True, but if you are serious about starting or expanding in Wiscasset, bringing jobs and helping enlarge the tax base, you may find a town full of taxpayers, volunteers and officials welcoming you and helping see you through it.

Wiscasset has its own airport, handy for clients, executives or your weekend trip, the library with the nation's oldest continuous circulation, a big community center with a pool and fitness and other programs for all ages, and a transfer station clean enough to eat off its floor.

It also has a community that loves its traditions and so far wants to keep its schools, which would be less of a question if a big new employer came along.

And business after Wiscasset business has reported getting business from Gardens Aglow travelers.

So, you who like to do things big and can follow through, look Wiscasset over, don't overlook it. It's ready for its next great period.
