Atletico Madrid's summer investment looked like it would be significant in taking the club in the right direction.

However, a disastrous week has seen both their hopes of winning the Champions League and LaLiga Santander dashed.

With two months of the season to go, it is the first time since Diego Simeone has been at the helm that Los Rojiblancos will end the season not competing for a title on any front.

Strangely enough, this comes after Simeone was given the most amount of money to spend in his entire reign so far.

Despite the fact that Atletico have been able to compete financially with the other big boys in LaLiga Santander over the last few years, as evidenced by their ability to be able to tie up Antoine Griezmann in a deal worth 20 million euros a season, the results of the club's other significant investments have not been seen on the pitch.

In addition, according to L'Equipe, the fact that Griezmann's new contract now includes a release clause of 125 million euros, instead of the initial reported figure of 200 million euros shows that the Frenchman himself might be considering his options and future at the club.

Tensions have been running high within the dressing room for a long time now as many of the players have voiced their concern and disapproval at the huge wage gap that exists between Griezmann and the rest of the squad.

The Frenchman Thomas Lemar, who signed from Monaco in 2018 has largely been a let-down so far.

The player who was brought in order to lead the team and make the difference in key matches has shown little sign of his scintillating form at Monaco.

This current Atletico Madrid side is the most expensive in the club's history, yet despite the huge investment that has been made namely with the signings of Diego Costa and Vitolo in January, they find themselves in a position where they are not currently competing to win any competition this season.
