Elgin makes $150,000 emergency loan to food pantry
Elgin Mayor David Kaptain has authorized a $150,000 emergency loan to Food For Greater Elgin to ensure the availability of food for those affected by the coronavirus outbreak.
“No one in our city should go hungry during this national health crisis,” Kaptain said in a news release. “So, the city of Elgin is doing what it can to make sure that a key organization that provides so much to those facing economic challenges.”
Food For Greater Elgin, the local food bank in Elgin, serves 1,600 households and 6,000 people, with about half of its patrons being children or seniors, the release said. The organization has had a 20% increase in food requests since shutdowns from the coronavirus outbreak began, the release said.
“The increased demand for providing food has resulted in a significant depletion of its cash reserves, making Food For Greater Elgin unable to purchase food, pay rent or meet payroll other expenses that are necessary for it to continue its operations without immediate assistance from the city,” the release said.
The money provide should allow the organization to continue its operations for the next three months, Kaptain said in the release.
East Dundee shuts offices, available online and by phone
The village of East Dundee is closing its offices to walk-in traffic until further notice.
Among the buildings affected are East Dundee Village Hall, the Depot, and public works and police departments. Essential services will be provided by appointment only or by using the red phone in the East Dundee Police Department lobby, a news release said.
Village departments with limited staffing will do business by phone or email.
Administrative adjudication hearings, issuance of solicitor’s permits and meter change-outs are on hold.
Water bill and other payments can still be made online or at the drop box outside village hall. All water/sewer/garbage late payment penalties have been suspended until further notice.

Prairie State closes law offices, help available by phone
Prairie State Legal Services is temporarily close its offices, including the one at 1024 W. Main St. in St. Charles, but its staff will be working remotely.
The agency plans to continue assisting current clients and those in need of civil legal aid, according to a news release. However, it will be suspending all in-person outreach and all nursing home visits. Client interviews will be conducted by phone or video conference.
