HOUSTON — There’s nothing quite as “American” as fireworks and old glory, except of course Neil Armstrong on the lunar surface next to old glory, circa 1969.

Fans of NASA will be thrilled to learn that Mission Control at Johnson Space Center in Webster is restored to its 1969 glory. The restoration took just two years, and fans of the Apollo and Gemini Missions can see it up close.

To support the restoration, the city of Webster gave the lead gift of $3.5 million toward the $5 million restoration campaign. Space Center Houston’s Kickstarter campaign was part of the center’s fundraising campaign which helped achieve the completion of the restoration.

The pieces in the restored rooms are either original artifacts that were cleaned and restored, such as the control consoles and displays, or the items have been recreated based on original samples.

This includes paint colors, coffee mugs, clothing items and even ashtrays. Fans and tourists can see Mission Control up close ahead of the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing.
