Over 350 students ages 7 to 12 participated in the winter Inspired by Science event.

Students in Lea and Eddy counties participated in the first winter session of Inspired by Science, a STEM camp supported by donations from Devon Energy and Nuclear Waste Partnership.

Excited campers were able to overcome pandemic restrictions by using a fully virtual learning environment to conduct interactive experiments and challenges.

Over 350 students ages 7 to 12 furthered their knowledge on topics such as polymers, hydrophobic substances and density.

“Interactive learning is incredibly important to developing young minds,” Devon Senior Community Relations Specialist Shannon Johnson said. “With students unable to attend school in person, Devon jumped at the opportunity to provide fun, hands-on STEM activities for at-home classrooms.”

Over 350 students ages 7 to 12 participated in the winter Inspired by Science event.

Campers were given interactive kits featuring four experiments and two STEM challenges. Students learned through activities like keeping sand dry underwater, making snow out of powder, growing colorful beads in water and creating a lava lamp effect with oil and water. They also designed and built a jingle bell run and a confetti launcher.

“The Inspired by Science STEM camp would not be possible without our partners,” Inspired by Science Founder and Camp Director Deena Antiporda said. “We are lucky to work with organizations such as Devon and Nuclear Waste Partnership who are as passionate about educating our community’s children as we are. Because of their generosity, Inspired by Science was able to continue cultivating the minds of young scientists even in uncertain times.”
