Suspect dead after leading officers on chase across Houston; Constable credits KPRC 2 with help tracking him down

Suspect allegedly fired shots at Pct. 4 Constable’s Office on Monday

HOUSTON – A suspect wanted for allegedly shooting at the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office building died Thursday after leading officers on a nearly hourlong chase across the Houston area, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman confirmed.

“Three days ago, I stood before you here at the same location and spoke to you about a suspect that chose to drive by this office and spray it with a barrage of bullets into the police station. Today, that suspect also chose to lead our deputies on a high-speed pursuit. And at the conclusion of that pursuit, the same suspect chose to pull a weapon and discharge at law enforcement. Unfortunately, that suspect is no longer with us, he is dead,” Herman said at a news conference following the incident.

On Monday, surveillance photos captured images of a person in a white four-door sedan driving into the parking lot of the station located at 20122 Holzworth Road shortly after 12:30 p.m. The suspect fired multiple shots at the front doors, windows and building before fleeing the scene, Herman said.

Herman said a tip from KPRC 2 led his office to the whereabouts of the suspect, and once spotted, a chase ensued with Houston police and other agencies joining to assist Harris County deputies.

“Channel 2 gave us some information that helped in this case tremendously, and again, it’s not the resolution we wanted, but that’s kind of where we’re at,” Herman explained. “We had an idea just through our investigation, through video surveillance and deputies working around the clock who the suspect was. And today the tip we received from Channel 2 helped kind of narrow in as to his location and what area he would be in and, you know, luckily one of our patrol units in south Houston spotted the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop and he chose to flee from deputies.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter tracked the chase as the suspect weaved in and out of traffic from the south to north sides of town, eventually ending up at a shopping center on Greenspoint Rd. and N. Sam Houston Pkwy.

The suspect circled a Whataburger in an attempt to further elude officers, but after finding no more room to maneuver, he pulled over around 11:44 a.m. in front of a Goodwill store.

Herman said the suspect drew his weapon and shots were fired. The suspect died at the scene.

An innocent bystander was struck in the ankle by bullet fragments and was taken to the hospital in good condition

Herman said the suspect has been in trouble with the law before. Officials have not released his name.

“I know that he has an extensive criminal background, but why did he choose to come here and attack law enforcement? We don’t know,” he said.
