Here's your guide to what's open and closed on Christmas and New Year's in Germantown and Montgomery County.

GERMANTOWN, MD — The holidays are for spending time with loved ones. Before you go, it's wise to check what's open and closed in the area. Knowing what services will be available on Christmas and New Year's will save you time and a massive headache, especially if you need to make a last-minute grocery run.

Government offices, libraries, schools, museums, recreation centers, and businesses all have their own opening and closing hours during this holiday week. Here's how it shakes out for Montgomery County residents:

County Offices – Closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Libraries – Closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. On Dec. 24 and 31, all library branches will close at 6 p.m.

Department of Liquor Control retail stores – Closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Recreation – Facilities will be closed and programs will be cancelled on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Montgomery Parks - For special programs, events, and operating schedules, visit www.MontgomeryParks.org.

Ride On – Service ends at 10 p.m. on Dec. 24. Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Metrorail – Information available at www.wmata.com.

Metrobus – Information available at www.wmata.com.

TRiPS Commuter Store at Silver Spring Transit Center – Closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

TRiPS Mobile Commuter Store – Closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

County-Provided Refuse/Recycling Pickup – Trash and recycling will not be picked up on Dec. 25. Collection will resume one day later, with the last pickup on Dec. 29. Trash and recycling will also not be picked up on Jan. 1. Collection will resume one day later, with the last pickup on Jan. 5.

The Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station – The facility will be closed at 3 p.m. on Dec. 24. On Dec. 25, the facility will be closed for the entire day. On Dec. 31, the facility will close at 3 p.m. And on Jan. 1, the facility will be closed for the day.

Parking at Public Garages, Lots, Curbside Meters – Normal parking fees and regulations will be in effect on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. However, parking will be free on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

State Offices and Courts – Closed on Dec. 25 and Jan 1.
