The University of Massachusetts system has tapped Mark Fuller, former dean from its flagship school in Amherst, to lead the Dartmouth campus.
Fuller was named the interim chancellor of UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday and will take the helm of the South Coast school on Jan. 19.
“Mark Fuller understands the university’s economic impact on the community,” said Marty Meehan, the system’s president, in announcing the decision. “I have full confidence that Mark, a longtime leader in the UMass system who values collaboration and partnership, is the right person to lead the campus through this time of transition.”
Fuller spent nine years as the dean of UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management. He is currently the vice chancellor of advancement and heads up that school’s fundraising efforts.

As dean, Fuller is credited with improving the national ranking of the UMass Amherst business school. He previously worked at Washington State University and Baylor University.
Fuller’s annual salary — $468,000 — will remain the same in the new position, UMass officials said.
UMass Dartmouth’s previous leader, Robert E. Johnson, left the post last August after three years to become president of Western New England University. The previous chancellor of UMass Dartmouth also remained in office for only three years.
This is the second time in recent years that Meehan has turned to a former UMass Amherst administrator to lead one of the system’s other campuses on an interim basis. In 2018, Meehan appointed Katherine Newman, a former UMass Amherst provost, to be the interim chancellor at UMass Boston.
Meehan had wanted Newman to become the permanent leader for UMass Boston, but faced faculty opposition. The system launched a national search and last year hired Marcelo Suárez-Orozco as chancellor of the Boston campus.
It is unclear when and if the system will launch a formal search for a chancellor at UMass Dartmouth. None is scheduled for now, UMass spokesman John Hoey said.
