Dallas County reports 17 new COVID-19 deaths, 1,074 coronavirus cases

Dallas County reported 17 more COVID-19 deaths and 1,074 new coronavirus cases Monday as hospitalizations in the area show signs of declining.

Of the new cases, 696 were confirmed and 378 were probable. The numbers bring the county’s overall case total to 384,251, including 326,995 confirmed and 57,256 probable. The death toll is 4,621.

All 17 of the latest people who died had underlying high-risk health conditions. One victim was a girl who officials said was age 10 to 19. Two were women in their 20s.

“There is still a high level of COVID-19 spread in our community,” Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement. “Please don’t assume it’s just allergies or a cold. Test if you have symptoms or have been exposed.”

The average number of new daily cases in the county for the last two weeks is 1,177. For the previous 14-day period, the average was 1,350.

The county reported that 746 people were hospitalized with the virus, but the number of hospitalizations has started to slowly decline, Jenkins said. As of Monday, 65 adult ICU beds were available in the 19-county area that encompasses Dallas-Fort Worth, and 21 adult ICU beds were available in Dallas County.

According to the state, 1,546,295 people in Dallas County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine as of Friday, while 1,310,737 — 60.1% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

The state’s vaccination data was not updated over the weekend and was not updated Monday while the state makes revisions to its dashboard that will include new metrics for booster doses, a note on the site says.

The note refers to a recommendation made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week on administering booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Federal regulators recommended a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine for Americans age 65 or older or those with preexisting medical conditions and high-risk work environments.

Texas

The state reported 5,914 more coronavirus cases Monday, including 4,853 confirmed cases, 939 probable cases and 122 old ones.

The state also reported 38 COVID-19 deaths, raising its toll to 62,980.

The state’s case total is now 4,008,025, including 3,347,504 confirmed and 660,521 probable.

There are a total of 9,719 hospitalizations in the state, including 2,833 in North Texas.

According to the state, 17,153,984 people in Texas have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine as of last week, while 14,683,383 — 61% of the state’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Tarrant County

Tarrant County reported 12 deaths and 809 cases Monday.

Of the new cases, 711 were confirmed and 98 were probable. The numbers bring the county’s case total to 343,425, including 285,118 confirmed and 58,307 probable. The death toll is 4,236.

The county reported 973 people were hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 1,151,532 people in Tarrant County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine as of last week, while 1,007,052 — 57.9% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Collin County

The state added one death and 230 cases to Collin County’s totals Monday.

Of the new cases, 196 were confirmed and 34 were probable. The numbers bring the county’s case total to 123,037, including 100,670 confirmed and 22,367 probable. The death toll is 1,005.

The county reported that 350 people were hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 676,918 people in Collin County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine as of last week, while 600,454 — 69.4% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Denton County

Denton County reported one death and 665 cases Monday.

The numbers bring the county’s case total to 99,575, including 72,558 confirmed and 27,017 probable. The death toll is 687.

The county reported 153 people were hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 530,633 people in Denton County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine as of last week, while 476,085 — 63.5% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.

Other counties

The Texas Department of State Health Services has taken over reporting for these other North Texas counties. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day.

The latest numbers are:

• Rockwall County: 16,439 cases (12,865 confirmed and 3,574 probable), 195 deaths.
• Kaufman County: 22,322 cases (18,061 confirmed and 4,261 probable), 368 deaths.
• Ellis County: 30,912 cases (24,821 confirmed and 6,091 probable), 401 deaths.
• Johnson County: 25,837 cases (21,229 confirmed and 4,608 probable), 463 deaths.
