Santa Clara County Gyms to Reopen Monday With New Guidelines, Restrictions

County directive calls for face coverings, strict social distancing and limited numbers inside gyms and fitness facilities

Gym time in Santa Clara County will look much different come Monday after the county released a detailed directive for reopening gyms and fitness centers in the age of COVID-19.

The directive calls for strict social distancing, the use of face coverings at all times and limits on the amount of people inside the facilities.

Everyone must wear face coverings, even while exercising. Free weights and weight machines can be used, but the equipment will be spaced out.

Machines used for cardio, such as treadmills, elliptical machines and exercise bikes, cannot be used indoors.

"Gym and fitness facility operators are encouraged to maximize the number of services they offer outdoors, as the risk of transmission of COVID-19 is significantly less outdoors than indoors," the county's directive said.

People will only be allowed to visit a gym by appointment. When they arrive, they will be asked a series of questions, including if they have tested positive for the coronavirus in the past 14 days, if they have come in close contact with someone who has tested positive in the past 14 days and if they have experienced coronavirus symptoms recently. If a person answers "yes" to any of the questions, they will not be allowed to enter.

Many areas within fitness facilities will be closed, including indoor pools, locker rooms, spas, saunas, steam rooms and showers. Water fountains, vending machines, and seating, waiting and lounge areas will be off limits.

Staff at gyms will be tasked with making sure everyone follows social distancing guidelines. Different pieces of equipment will be placed at least 6 feet apart in order to keep gymgoers separated.

Staff will also be required to regularly disinfect all high-touch surfaces.
