Florida reported a total of 8,555 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 953,300, according to data provided by the Florida Department of Health.

Tuesday's case count breaks the slight reprieve from Sunday and Monday, when the number of daily new cases was in the 6,000s.

On Nov. 15, the state recorded 10,105 COVID-19 cases, the highest number since July. The second-highest was 9,890 on Nov. 14; the third-highest was 8,955 on Nov. 18; and the fourth-highest was 8,853 on Nov. 19.

Of the new cases, 938,830 were Florida residents.

The state announced a total of 72 new deaths Tuesday, bringing the number of residents who have died from the virus to 18,157. There have been 226 deaths among non-residents.

The state’s daily positivity rate, calculated by using the total number of people tested for the virus and the total number of people who have tested positive, was 7.45% with a total of 108,546 tests administered Monday.

As of Tuesday, 53,827 Florida residents had been hospitalized with COVID-19.

Over the past three weeks, the FDOH has not released the COVID-19 update at the usual time of 11 a.m. Instead, the update has come late in the afternoon, or well into the evening. Tuesday's update was released around 2:30 p.m.

Despite repeated attempts by The News-Journal to obtain a new time for the update, the state has either responded that it is trying to provide the most accurate information or, after several repeated attempts last week and an attempt on Monday, did not respond at all.
