CHICAGO — It's the time of year when late-night parkers should be suspicious of open spots on arterial streets. The city's annual winter overnight parking ban goes into effect Tuesday at 3 a.m. until April 1.

Getting caught parking overnight along 107 miles of "vital arterial streets" between 3 and 7 a.m. comes with a $60 ticket, a $150 towing fee and $25-a-day storage fees. A separate parking ban on 500 miles of main streets also goes into effect starting Tuesday at anytime when two inches of snow accumulates.

The overnight parking and snow parking bans were established to prevent snow-plowing problems that occurred during the snowstorms that crippled the city in 1967 and 1979.
