More than 2,000 cyclists from across the country made a stop in South Texas for the 16th Conquer the Coast on Saturday.

The cycling event kicked off at Bayfront Park in Corpus Christi where riders cycled through three different treks —  a 10-mile, 21-mile and 66-mile trek.

The 66-mile route, which is coined as the "most unique ride in Texas," ran through Portland, Ingleside, Aransas Pass and Port Aransas before heading through Mustang Island back to Corpus Christi.

Last year Conquer the Coast was forced to cancel its event due to severe weather; however, this year's event encompassed sunny skies, scenic views and a high turnout.

"We are really excited to see the sun out so we could show how beautiful Corpus Christi Bay is to the hundreds of riders who turned out to Conquer the Coast," said Cecilia Dupree, a program specialist for the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce.

Dupree said Conquer the Coast started out 16 years ago as an initiative to promote fitness and healthy living in South Texas. It is also an event that helps raise money for the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Leadership Corpus Christi, Lemonade Day, Bike Texas, Bikes for Kids and the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Athletic Fund.

"I think it is really great that we were able to bring back this event this year," Dupree said. "We always love seeing the riders come back to Corpus Christi year after year to support our local businesses and help our community flourish."
