What a good job Youngstown Neighborhood Development has done with the Glenwood Avenue area. As someone who drives on it regularly, it’s nice to see the improvements, especially with its two latest acquisitions: a strip plaza and the Foster Theatre.

• Youngstown

I wouldn’t mind a tax to help, if the engineer’s office was effective. Example: closure of Knauf Road for three weeks to replace a culvert. The crew waits half a day for an OK from a supervisor to continue. Columbiana County roads aren’t full of potholes. Yes there are fewer miles of roads, but they also have a much smaller budget. So what’s the secret to Columbiana’s success?

• Canfield

From the front page on June 20: “Fire districts left out.” The bill went from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to the floor with no hearings. Where was U.S Rep. Tim Ryan? I believe he is on the Appropriations Committee. Isn’t that the committee that gives out money? Perhaps Mr. Ryan is so busy trying to be a senator that he forgot to “fight” for the fire districts in our Valley. So, what’s new? Nothing!

• Boardman

What a disgrace that the local fire districts received little or no COVID-19 relief money. That always has been my biggest problem with government. They choose winners and losers.

• Boardman

“Trump terrorists” have become the greatest threat to national security since World War II. These Americans are willing to attack our country’s democratic government to satisfy the dictates of a man striving for absolute power. We all witnessed the atrocity Jan. 6, and now we must be concerned about a repeat of this terrorist event. I implore Americans to pray for deliverance from these traitors. God bless America!

• Youngstown

I suggest taking these people shooting at each other, after they are indicted (except those charged with murder), load them, their guns, ammunition and a military vehicle on a C-130 and parachute them into Afghanistan or the Middle East. Tell them, “Have a good day, and do all the shooting that you want! Have a blast with the Taliban, Al-Qaida.”

• Boardman

Let me get this straight. The government (predominantly the liberal left) wants to restrict our Second Amendment rights to purchase firearms. But the government (the military) cannot even keep their firearms inventory under control? Sunday’s headline on an AP article was: “Stolen US military guns used in crimes.” What am I missing here?

• New Castle

Rabid right rallies with misnomers like “faith and freedom” are easily identified for what they really are about by their loudest members shouting “traitor” at their former vice president. Strange, isn’t it, that Mike Pence is the only member of the last administration to uphold his oath to our Constitution, yet the easily misled still rail against him.

• Canfield

In the interest of saving our democracy, instead of making it harder for minorities to vote, should we not make it harder for people who voted for an insurrectionist president to vote?

Endless stories about bears, raccoons, deer, mother nature in general. Those animals live outside! Quit killing them “just because.” Read! Raccoons come out in the day if they’re hungry or to teach the young. They might not be rabid. Bears are out now. Get used to it! We take their homes, then get mad when they eat where they used to live. Mahatma Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

“Now we’ve got to worry about whether we are going to be arrested, tried and executed at the curb by law enforcement.” Mayor Tito Brown made that statement during the George Floyd memorial service in Youngstown. It is irresponsible for anyone, especially an elected official, to make such an outrageous, divisive, reckless and untrue statement about law enforcement. Mayor Brown should be ashamed of himself!

Boardman

From the start President Trump called it the Chinese virus and closed the border. But the national media and Democrats, including Joe Biden, called him racist and said he was wrong. Now Biden is trying to get a commission to investigate the Wuhan lab to see if this is where the virus originated. We all know that it came from Wuhan. Too bad Democrats didn’t put as much effort into stopping the virus as they did in impeaching Trump.

Racism-mania rages, but does it have to? An example: Someone turned off the microphone during an American Legion speaker’s Memorial Day comments in Hudson, Ohio, about freed black slaves honoring Civil War soldiers, showing fear of repercussion when blacks or slaves is mentioned. True, comments can be construed differently, but wasn’t this expressed in a positive light?

Also, regarding one-way racism, I hope behavior of both blacks and whites

in shared public settings will be civil this

summer.

In the May 29 Vindicator, a Soundoff from Canfield couldn’t have said it better, in light of Youngstown shootings, “Dodge City!” Where are Black Lives Matter protesters yelling for justice? They’re MIA when there are shootings, but let law enforcement get involved and they’ll want to burn the city down. Look at your own shortcomings, and then come and make a difference. Get involved to help save everybody’s life! We all matter!

Beaver Township

I do not know why anyone would want to be on any kind of leadership body, such as councils, school boards or any kind of elected officials. They can never make a decision to satisfy everyone. They can follow all state regulations and guidelines and still get criticized.

The Mahoning Valley lost one of its better angels with the passing of Sister Jerome Corcoran last Sunday. Whether you were directly impacted by her efforts or not, her dedication to helping the most vulnerable among us emulated hope and compassion at its best. Sister Jerome never wanted the spotlight on herself, only on the needs around her. Let’s honor Sister Jerome’s legacy by continuing her commitment to the common good.

Youngstown

Why do Mahoning County commissioners wait to tell the public how they’re spending the federal stimulus money? It’s just business as usual in Youngstown. This should have been totally transparent and open to the people. Hopefully they will do better with the other $40 million, but really don’t expect it.

Boardman

When Trumbull commissioners secretly manipulate government prior to public meetings, the Vindy outs their treachery. Maybe it could do the same for the U.S. Senate when Mitch McConnell’s arcane “Senate rules” keep Democrats’ measures from public airing. It’s past time to examine how government really functions and for Cal Thomas’ wasted space comparing a disastrous president with long-ago candidate Barry Goldwater. Plenty of work for a free press. More Jonah Goldberg, please. In my heart, I know he’s right.

Canfield

For over 100 years, doubleheader MLB games were nine innings each. Why suddenly are they playing only seven innings in doubleheaders? Why do they now put runners at second base in extra innings? Let them play as it was intended for fans paying to come. Stop taking traditions out of sports. The overpriced concessions won’t mind. We stopped watching NASCAR because traditions have been removed. Stop fixing what’s not broken.

Canfield

For the first time since it was passed in 1976, the Hyde Amendment was omitted in President Biden’s proposed 2022 budget. This amendment prohibits using federal funds for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger. Without its inclusion, Catholics and others would be forced to fund abortions through tax dollars. It’s time for our president to be more than an “in-name-only” Catholic and reflect his faith by supporting the Hyde Amendment.

Poland

I’ve been watching the coverage this week on the migrant problem, and I have a question. Why aren’t the smugglers who bring these refugees to the border being arrested? The Mexican government could do more. We have video coverage of the

coyotes dumping children over the wall. We have video coverage by news organizations of smugglers in boats. Let’s arrest the people who make a living from this suffering.

Canfield

Since most student loans, including those federally subsidized, are held by private finance companies, instead of our government paying them off, the government should buy them back. Students can pay them off under the same conditions, but government can make them interest free, promoting responsibility that the right wants, and the opportunity to escape the financial burden quicker, supported by the left. It’s a win-win. The rule that bankruptcy won’t shield you from loan debt should remain.

Youngstown

How obvious it is

that Facebook banned Donald Trump for two years. They did this only to make sure he can’t use Facebook during the 2022 election. No matter if you’re Democrat or Republican, this should terrify you. Social media companies should not have the power to silence anyone. Today it’s Trump, but tomorrow it may be you. This is blatant censorship.

Joe Biden made Kamala Harris border lead more than 70 days ago. She has yet to visit the border or do anything about the hundreds of thousands caught crossing this year. At her phony interviews she gets a bit nasty if asked when are you going to the border. So let me ask again: When is Harris going to the border?
