Myra Jones

Myra Jones a resident of Mount Pleasant for over 30 years has announced her candidacy for Mount Pleasant Town Council.

Jones is a full-time paralegal and devotes her spare time to her family and community service. Over the last year, she has worked tirelessly and diligently as a Director of the Charleston Beach Foundation. That work culminated in the enactment of a law ensuring that, never again, will a municipality restrict access to public roadways that lead to our state’s public beaches without prior approval of the State Department of Transportation.

While her efforts as a citizen and director of the nonprofit were hugely successful, we know that only those individuals in elected positions have the position and power to make the important decisions for our community.

“I am seeking a seat at the table to have a more effective and active role in government,” said Jones. “I am not a politician, but have been a community servant for most of my life, giving of my time to various charities. My life and work experiences, community service and successful advocacy efforts, along with a strong work ethic, will allow me to look at issues from all angles to find the best solutions for issues facing our community. As Abraham Lincoln said, government should be ‘of the people, by the people, for the people’. People is who I am.”

Although Jones was born in Sumter, her family roots are deep in Charleston, going back to the mid-1700s. She grew up in West Ashley, graduated from St. Andrews High School, and lived in Arizona and California before coming home in 1986. She has lived in Mount Pleasant since 1990.

Jones’ parents were from the Greatest Generation. Her father served in the Navy during WWII. He mother was a real “Rosie the Riveter” during the war and then joined the Navy. Together, her parents ran their “Mom & Pop” pharmacy in Avondale. She learned from them the value of hard work and the duty to give your time and efforts back to your community.

Over the years, Jones assisted charitable organizations such as the Carolina Youth Development Center, First Tee Program, Carolina Film Alliance and Actors’ Theatre of South Carolina. She also served on the Paralegal Advisory Committee at Trident Technical College for 25 years, in various volunteer positions at her children’s schools (Wando High School and Charleston County School of the Arts) and at her church, Bethel United Methodist Church.

Jones began working in the legal field on Broad Street downtown while in high school, and has continued working as a legal assistant and paralegal for the last 46 years, working in small and large firms, a city attorney’s office and now in the office of General Counsel at The InterTech Group, Inc. In connection with her profession, Jones served as President of the Charleston Association of Legal Assistants and was a founding member and President of the Trident Association of Legal Assistants, a Trident Technical College association.

Jones and her husband, David, have two adult sons, Guy “Bubba” Bryant and Jonathan Jones. Their daughter, Chrissy Bryant Helfenstein passed away in 2019, but gifted them with 4 grandsons, one of which lives in Mount Pleasant.
